June 2024: A Month of Gloom and Glory

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding June Gloom

As we step into June, it’s time to don our magical sunglasses and view this month through a fresh lens.

According to meteorologist Kyle Elliot from AccuWeather, "June gloom describes a phenomenon characterized by a layer of low clouds and fog, known as the marine layer, that frequently appears within a few miles of the Southern California coastline during the night and morning hours" (AccuWeather.com, 2024). This weather pattern can happen any month of the year, but it is most prevalent from May through September and can extend deep into Southern California's inland areas. Here, where temperatures are hot and dry, we experience "May Gray" and "June Gloom" until that intense high-pressure system decides to settle in. While typically I enjoy that kind of weather, I prefer to avoid sunburn. The cloudy mornings in June prolong our cooler temperatures for a few extra hours, and they are indeed a blessing. The marine layer was quite prominent in May and June, but recently, the days have turned scorching, with little relief at night.

However, my June has not been overshadowed by gloomy weather. It’s one of my favorite times of the year as I celebrate my wedding anniversary this month. The children, along with my wife who is a teacher, kick off their summer break, bringing a joyous atmosphere to our home. People seem to adopt a more carefree attitude. Of course, June also brings Father's Day, and my family treats me with extra care. Work tends to ramp up in June, resulting in a busier schedule and quicker project turnaround, but the increased activity also makes the days fly by. It’s a double-edged sword.

Section 1.1: Mid-Season Reflections in MLB

June signifies the mathematical midpoint of the MLB season, contrasting with the symbolic halfway point represented by the All-Star game. By now, teams have a clear understanding of their strengths and weaknesses, determining what they need to mount a championship challenge or what they must trade away to prepare for next season. If you haven’t heard, my beloved L.A. Dodgers have signed a phenomenal player from Japan, whose blend of skill and power is remarkable to witness as he dazzles during the first half of the season.

Section 1.2: Lakers' Struggles

On the flip side, watching the Dodgers has been a stark contrast to my experiences as a Lakers fan this June. The month concluded on a slightly better note, salvaged by a surprising first-round NBA draft pick, but it was marred by a series of disappointments that brought a heavy dose of gloom to Los Angeles.

Chapter 2: The Triple Frown of the Lakers

This month, the Lakers and their supporters faced a trifecta of setbacks: embarrassment, heartache, and frustration. The first blow came when Dan Hurley rejected the team's overtures.

Damn Daniel.

Earlier in the month, I expressed my thoughts on this misstep and the franchise's struggles over the past decade. My views have softened a bit since then, but I still believe the inconsistency of the Lakers since the passing of Dr. Jerry Buss stems from Jim and Jeanie's poor hires and impulsive decisions. This has resulted in cascading issues from the front office to the court. However, I don’t think the failure to recruit Hurley rests solely on management. Although they could have offered him a staggering contract, making him one of the highest-paid coaches in the league, they would have faced ridicule for such a risky move, especially given the spotty history of college coaches transitioning to the NBA.

The second hit came with the loss of Jerry West, a legendary executive and Hall of Fame player for the Lakers. His contributions to the franchise are immeasurable, and his absence is deeply felt.

The third blow was the Celtics winning their 18th NBA championship, pulling ahead of the Lakers for the most titles in NBA history. They showcased dominant performances this season. At least Jerry wasn’t around to witness that.

The Lakers did manage to finish the 2024 NBA draft on a high note, catching some heat for selecting Bronny James in the second round due to accusations of "nepotism," especially given his lackluster college season. Yet, Rob Pelinka justified the choice by highlighting its historical significance; no father-son duo has ever played together in the NBA. Some have argued against the pick, citing it as a waste, but second-round selections are typically developmental projects, and they seldom make the roster.

Dads: A Tribute

A special shoutout to all the fathers actively involved in their children’s lives. Life can be challenging, especially when circumstances change, but being present for your kids is what matters most. My parents divorced when I was six, and visits with my dad were limited to once a year due to distance. He had a new family soon after, and while he was not the ideal role model, his love for me and my brother was always evident. His memory continues to influence the father I aspire to be.

Let’s also acknowledge step-dads, who often face different challenges compared to biological fathers. They play a vital role in their families, and I have great respect for those navigating this path. My younger brother and I were fortunate to have a step-dad who cared for us and imparted valuable lessons, although he could have benefited from relaxing a bit more.

As spring transitions to summer, we look forward to the dog days ahead, filled with the excitement of football and the creation of new summer memories with family and friends.

Debate of the Dead

We deserve better options than the current political landscape. The grip that the two-party system has on our democracy leaves little room for viable alternatives. Can we not have candidates who are younger than 60, capable of coherent discourse, and genuinely interested in serving the public? It seems like an impossible request given the current climate.
