Understanding Swing Trading Strategies
Swing trading can be a highly effective approach for capitalizing on short-term market movements. When the NYMO indicator begins to rise, it signals a buying opportunity for stocks at the next market open. Conversely, if the NYMO declines, traders should consider selling stocks at the next open.
For longer-term strategies, the NYSI indicator serves a similar function. An upward trend in the NYSI suggests that it's time to buy stocks at the following market open, while a downward trend indicates that it may be wise to either liquidate positions or short-sell at the next open.
Both the NYMO and NYSI are derived from the McClellan Oscillator and are considered by many to be the most insightful metrics of market psychology, effectively capturing the oscillations between fear and greed that characterize market movements. In essence, most stocks tend to perform in alignment with the broader market trends.
Recent Market Observations
On July 13, 2023, I revisited four stocks that were highlighted during day two of the NYSI buy signal. Observing the market two days later, it’s clear that stocks generally continue to rise in conjunction with a rising NYSI.
The accompanying chart illustrates the performance of these stocks over two trading days, showing the gains relative to an initial investment of $10,000. At this stage, it's important to acknowledge that markets can become excessively overextended. Therefore, taking profits when one feels satisfied with their earnings is always a prudent strategy.
As an interesting note, the green indicators on the left axis of the chart reflect the $10,000 gains resulting from NYSI swings since June 1st—without accounting for the current trades displayed on the right. This raises a humorous point: Did someone really suggest "Sell in May and stay away"?
