A Reflection on Key Worker Experiences During COVID-19

In this piece, I would like to share my experiences as a part-time supermarket assistant in the UK during the COVID-19 pandemic. While I don’t personally consider myself a ‘key worker,’ I recognize that the government classifies roles like mine—those involved in the sale and delivery of food and essential goods—as essential. The pandemic has touched nearly everyone globally, altering lives to varying degrees. Many have faced restrictions on their freedoms, while others have endured the heartache of illness or loss due to the virus. Yet, throughout this challenging time, humanity has shown remarkable adaptability, with individuals stepping up to support their communities.

Here are five key lessons I learned while working on the front lines during this unprecedented time:

1. Job Satisfaction:

Having worked in the supermarket for almost seven years, I often felt that my job lacked personal significance beyond financial necessity. My role did not provide mental stimulation and, at times, it diminished my self-worth. However, the onset of COVID-19 transformed my perspective. The urgency of the situation highlighted the importance of my work, especially as customers rushed to stock up on essentials, leaving shelves empty and vulnerable individuals without needed items. The real challenge was not a lack of stock but the insufficient staff to restock shelves quickly. Many colleagues opted out of work due to health concerns, exacerbating our workload. I began to see my role not just as a job but as a mission to support my team and community, which brought me a newfound sense of fulfillment.

2. People’s Willingness to Adapt:

Initially, there was hesitance among both customers and staff to adjust to new safety protocols. However, it was impressive to witness how quickly people incorporated social distancing guidelines into their routines. The UK government advised maintaining a two-meter distance, which was crucial in high-traffic areas like supermarkets, particularly given the elderly population in my community. Most customers respected this distance and complied with safety measures, such as wearing masks and standing patiently in lines, regardless of the weather. This collective effort demonstrated a shared commitment to the safety of those working in essential services.

3. A Thank You Goes a Long Way:

Expressing gratitude became especially significant during the pandemic, as many essential workers, including supermarket staff, often go unrecognized. It was uplifting to receive appreciative remarks from customers, which fostered a sense of connection and value in our work. I learned to express my gratitude to others in service roles, as a simple ‘thank you’ can uplift someone’s spirits, especially during difficult times. The pandemic served as a reminder of the importance of acknowledging those who perform essential jobs.

4. Failure to Adequately Protect Key Workers:

While my experiences have been largely positive, I must also address the shortcomings in providing adequate personal protective equipment (PPE) to workers. It took nearly two months after the lockdown for us to receive proper PPE, which was disheartening. The initial supplies were limited to basic masks and hand sanitizer, which fell short of what was needed to ensure our safety. This lack of protection led to increased tensions among staff, as many felt their well-being was not prioritized. Some colleagues contracted the virus, further straining an already overburdened workforce. It was frustrating to see the government fail to anticipate the need for increased PPE supplies, especially as the severity of the situation became apparent early on.

5. Renewed Faith in Humanity:

Despite the challenges, a few individuals’ choices during this time restored my faith in humanity. A decision by my supermarket's parent company to allow some employees to work from home while offering full pay to others sparked discontent among staff. However, two workers chose to join us in the supermarket rather than taking the furlough option. Their willingness to share the burden brought a sense of camaraderie and lifted our spirits during a tough time. While there may be more heroic stories out there, their choice to work alongside us rather than take the easy route deserves recognition.

In conclusion, my experiences during the pandemic have provided invaluable insights into the human spirit, the importance of community support, and the need for proper protection for essential workers. Let’s carry these lessons forward as we move toward recovery.
