Apple's Latest MacBook Lineup: A Step Backwards?

Written on

Chapter 1: WWDC Unveiling and Initial Reactions

This week, Apple conducted its WWDC event, offering glimpses into the technological advancements on the horizon. Alongside exciting updates for iOS, macOS, and watchOS, the company also revealed modifications to its hardware, which I had eagerly anticipated.

In 2020, I upgraded my MacBook Pro from a 2012 model to the newer version. The 2012 model epitomized the "Pro" designation, boasting features like MagSafe, USB ports, and an SD card slot. While my 2020 model is commendable, the reduced port availability has always felt like a trade-off. With Apple reinstating MagSafe, SD card slots, and HDMI ports, I was hopeful about a new upgrade.

However, the newly launched 13" MacBook Pro feels even more like a compromise than its predecessors. I’d argue it resembles more of a transitional model between the Air and Pro lines, and perplexingly, it's challenging to justify its superiority over the Air. In fact, it may be harder to rationalize purchasing the 13" Pro over the Air.

MacBook Pro Models Overview

Chapter 1.1: The MagSafe Dilemma

MagSafe was one of Apple's standout innovations, effectively preventing countless laptops from crashing to the ground when someone accidentally tripped over the power cord. This system utilized a magnetic connection rather than a deep plug, allowing a strong hold while enabling easy disconnection without moving the laptop.

Inexplicably, Apple eliminated this feature in recent years, only to bring it back. However, it's now only available on specific models: the MacBook Air and the 14" and 16" MacBook Pros. Unfortunately, the 13" MacBook Pro lacks MagSafe, meaning that to enjoy this feature, I must choose between two unsatisfactory options: a less capable Air or a more expensive 14" MacBook Pro.

Where Have the Ports Gone?

Currently, my Pro features four USB-C ports (two on each side) and a headphone jack. While I still require a dongle for most connections, the ports' dual placement allows for flexibility. However, the 2022 model complicates this scenario.

Here's where it gets tricky—similar to other puzzling decisions regarding its chargers, the new setup feels very un-Apple-like. The MacBook Air includes MagSafe, two Thunderbolt ports, and a headphone socket. The MacBook Pro 14" and 16" models offer three Thunderbolt ports, MagSafe, an SDXC card slot, HDMI, and a headphone jack. Yet, the 13" Pro provides just two Thunderbolt ports on one side and a headphone jack, without MagSafe. This configuration places the 13" Pro closer to the Air, but without the useful features that MagSafe provides.

Chapter 1.2: The Touch Bar Experience

The 13" MacBook Pro is equipped with a Touch Bar, which may not appeal to everyone, but I find it beneficial. It presents useful information at your fingertips in every application and is particularly advantageous for auto-filling forms. However, the 14" and 16" models do not feature the Touch Bar. Therefore, if I were to upgrade to the new 13", I would lose essential connection ports and the Touch Bar—seemingly a regression.

Touch Bar Functionality

Subsection 1.2.1: The Upgrading Dilemma

Imagine being in my position, searching through the MacBook lineup and knowing you want a Pro model. The 13" doesn’t meet all your requirements, but it has the Touch Bar and the latest M2 chip, which are significant. The limited ports are concerning, so a look at the larger models is in order. But wait—neither larger model is equipped with the M2 chip!

To summarize:

  • The Air features MagSafe, the M2 chip, and two ports.
  • The 13" Pro offers the M2 chip and Touch Bar but only two ports.
  • The 14" and 16" Pros have more ports, yet lack the Touch Bar and the M2 chip.

It's essential to recognize that MacBooks are pricey, with a significant price gap of £500 between the 13" Pro and the 14" Pro—making the decision on which compromises to accept even more daunting.

Chapter 2: The True Nature of the MacBook Pro

Not all MacBook Pros are created equal. I anticipated that they would all offer similar capabilities, with variations in size and power. However, this is not the case. The 14" and 16" MacBook Pros are not only larger but also significantly more powerful than the smaller model. They feature a six-speaker audio system with four force-canceling woofers and three high-quality microphones, along with spatial audio capabilities.

Clearly, these larger models deserve the title “Pro.” The 13" model, however, falls short. While it surpasses the MacBook Air in power, it doesn’t belong in the same league as the larger Pros. When I reached out to Apple's support team, they surprisingly agreed, suggesting that it might be seen as a more powerful MacBook Air—a bridge between the two.

Ultimately, this raises a disappointing conclusion: Apple currently lacks a laptop that meets the needs of users like me. The MacBook lineup, much like its inconsistent charging solutions, presents a confusing array of options. The most powerful models lack the M2 chip and the time-saving Touch Bar, while the entry-level MacBook Air boasts both features. Meanwhile, the entry-level Pro has the Touch Bar and M2 chip but lacks sufficient ports, still relying on dongles for connectivity (and hoping to remember them during presentations).

While Apple excels in software innovation, I can only hope for some clarity to return to its hardware division. Until then, I urge everyone to share their feedback on the products.
