Rediscovering Joy: How LEGO Helped Me Find My Ikigai Again

Written on

I stumbled upon the term "ikigai," a Japanese concept linked to well-being, while browsing social media platforms like LinkedIn, Instagram, and TikTok. Despite my usual reluctance to discuss wellness topics, the frequent mentions prompted me to reflect on my own experiences. In 2022, I reignited my passion for LEGO, which I realized I hadn’t shared before. Apologies in advance for this lengthy piece; I often find myself in a reflective mood by year’s end, leading to articles that can stretch over eight minutes of reading. Thanks for your patience!

Though I never entirely left LEGO behind, my interest surged in 2022. As a child, I delighted in various sets, often eagerly anticipating them as gifts. I even found ways to earn extra pocket money to support my LEGO habit. Between 2015 and 2017, when I was more financially stable, I expanded my collection with many Technic sets, which I still cherish.

The year 2022 stood out in my LEGO journey. A glance at the graphs from brickset.com reveals that out of 117 sets I own, 40 were released that year.

According to Brickset, I possess 8% of all LEGO sets released in 2022, which is quite astonishing! Notably, I also acquired most of the 12 sets from 2021 that I own during the same year, totaling around 50 new sets!

You might be thinking, "That's a significant amount of money spent on plastic bricks!" But hear me out—these "simple plastic bricks" have taught me more about myself in just one year than many life experiences combined.

The Context

For those unfamiliar, I hail from Transylvania, a real region in Romania with a complex history, not just a fictional setting. Being both Irish and Hungarian, I have a unique perspective on current events, especially with the ongoing conflict in Ukraine that began in early 2022, which deeply affected my life and family.

I've kept quiet about the mental health challenges stemming from these events, as discussing such topics remains a taboo. However, the news shook my foundation in unexpected ways, especially since I was still recovering from the pandemic's mental toll. The anxiety over real threats, like bombs potentially endangering my family, particularly my father who has been battling cancer, weighed heavily on me.

At this juncture, I felt the need for a lifeline.

While many find solace in substances like alcohol or drugs, I sought a more constructive outlet—something that could also foster personal growth. This led me back to my childhood passion for LEGO.

Finding Ikigai in LEGO

Childhood is often viewed as a carefree time focused on growth and exploration. Yet, as adults, we tend to reprimand one another with phrases like "grow up." Upon reflection, I realize this mindset can be harmful. The pressures of adulthood often drown out our inner child.

The unfortunate reality is that many of today’s conflicts arise from individuals who have lost touch with their youthful innocence. The notion of "growing up" can lead to a life filled with bitterness and anger. I choose to embrace my inner child instead.

LEGO is a gateway to this childlike wonder. Opening a new set and pouring the pieces out evokes a therapeutic experience. The moment you start assembling, the outside world fades away, allowing you to momentarily escape your worries.

These bricks are more than mere plastic; they represent a time when cost didn't matter—just the joy of creating and playing. It's essential to reconnect with that feeling and let go of adult responsibilities, even if just for a while.

Relearning how to play as an adult is arguably one of the most mature decisions you can make, and your mental health will undoubtedly benefit.

Today's LEGO sets cater to a diverse audience, from classic themes to modern franchises. There’s likely something for everyone to enjoy. I’m convinced that if you took 100 people unfamiliar with LEGO into a store, they'd leave with at least one set.

I believe many who resist LEGO either haven't tried it or haven't allowed themselves to reconnect with their childhood.

Why LEGO is My Ikigai

You might wonder how LEGO could also be your ikigai. Let's explore the four key elements: "you love it," "you're skilled at it," "the world needs it," and "you can earn from it."

  • You love it. I genuinely adore LEGO. I frequently visit stores just to browse and feel inspired. With over 30 years of experience building with LEGO, my affection for it is undeniable.
  • You're skilled at it. After decades of practice, I've honed my skills. While I acknowledge that some adult fans of LEGO (AFOLs) excel beyond my abilities, I’ve gained enough knowledge to navigate various themes and create my own designs.
  • The world needs it. While more plastic may seem counterproductive, I argue that LEGO offers a necessary outlet for creativity and stress relief. I channel my passion into writing, which resonates with others, as evidenced by reader feedback.
  • You can earn from it. This year, I spent around $3000 on LEGO sets and earned $800 from my writing on Medium. By reinvesting my earnings, I can sustain this hobby while sharing my experiences with others.

Of course, results may vary, but I firmly believe that many people fail to explore their passions simply because they never try.

LEGO allows for various approaches—whether you’re a seasoned expert or a newcomer rediscovering the joy of building. What matters is finding what resonates with you.

Ultimately, the focus isn't solely on LEGO; it’s about you finding your passion and nurturing it into your ikigai.

So, I pose this serious question to you: What brings you joy, and how will you embrace it? What childhood interests can you revisit? Or perhaps, it's time to discover something new—like giving LEGO a chance?
