Finding Joy: Embracing the Non-Linear Journey of Healing

Written on

When embarking on the journey of healing, we often recognize that something is amiss in our lives, yet pinpointing the exact issue can be elusive. Each person's path to recovery is distinct; what has proven effective for one individual may not resonate with another. It is crucial to consider where you start and the destination you envision for yourself.

Everyone aspires to achieve happiness. Some individuals are fortunate enough to begin life surrounded by love and support, fostering a positive outlook. Conversely, many face challenges such as poverty or dysfunctional family environments, leading to unmet needs and a sense of discontent from an early age.

Despite these hardships, the universal desire for happiness persists. However, for those who faced struggles in their formative years, the concept of happiness may seem out of reach, as if it belongs to others but not to them. Yet, the allure of happiness remains, fueling dreams and aspirations.

To embark on the path to joy, it is essential to accept your current circumstances. Start by assessing your life and envisioning your ideal future. Activities like journaling or creating a vision board can help clarify your desires. Reflect on what truly brings you joy and what nurtures your spirit—be it spending time with animals, engaging in hobbies, or pursuing personal interests.

Change is rarely straightforward. Just as identifying the source of our discomfort can be challenging, understanding what will genuinely bring us joy may also elude us. Many begin their journeys by consuming self-help literature, watching motivational videos, or listening to inspiring podcasts, searching for that which resonates deeply.

When you discover something that speaks to you, lean into it and explore it further. Whether you suspect mental health challenges, toxic relationships, or the need for a new direction, recognizing the barriers to your aspirations is essential. Yet, the most significant hurdle is often a lack of clarity about what those aspirations are.

If you suspect that mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, or PTSD may be affecting you, consulting with a therapist or psychiatrist could be beneficial. Therapeutic interventions and medications can serve as valuable initial steps toward regaining control. For those experiencing chronic stress or dissatisfaction in their careers or relationships, coaching may also provide support. A coach can work closely with you to set actionable goals and guide you toward achieving them.

Having professional assistance can be invaluable, especially when the weight of your challenges feels overwhelming. Signs that you might benefit from professional help include persistent feelings of anxiety, sadness, hopelessness, or suicidal thoughts.

If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts, I urge you to reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (US) at 1–800–273–8255 or contact a local crisis center for immediate assistance. Many workplaces also offer Employee Assistance Programs that provide free counseling sessions.

Once you begin working with a professional, they will share their credentials during your initial meeting. It's crucial to ensure that they specialize in the areas where you seek help to foster a productive therapeutic relationship.

As you start making changes in your life, the progress may feel slow at first. This was my experience as well; I longed for immediate relief from my discomfort. However, personal transformation is a gradual process, and often, those around you may notice your growth before you do.

As time passes, you will begin to see progress. Eventually, you may experience a significant realization that accelerates your journey. This moment can lead to an influx of self-discoveries, catalyzing profound changes in your life.

However, change can be unpredictable. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, we encounter obstacles or plateau before reaching our ultimate goals. Accepting a state of 'good enough' can become a barrier to deeper fulfillment. I have found myself in this situation multiple times, particularly in therapy, where some professionals aimed for a superficial resolution rather than true healing.

I learned that not every therapist will push you to reach your fullest potential. My experience changed when I found a more dedicated counseling center, which aimed for a higher standard of well-being. They assessed my progress with a scale of 1 to 10, striving to elevate me to a 10 instead of settling for mediocrity.

Everyone deserves to aspire to a 10 in their life. Stopping at a 5 is settling for less than you deserve. If your therapist is content with a score of 5, it may be time to seek a new professional or work towards that 10 independently.

While achieving a perfect 10 may be elusive, I firmly believe it is attainable, if only for fleeting moments. To cultivate happiness, continue investing in yourself through practices such as meditation, yoga, or mindfulness, and pursue fulfilling hobbies, careers, and relationships.

Each individual's journey to happiness is unique. In my book, Happy. Healthy. Rich. The Smart Mom's Guide to Living Your Best Life, I share insights from my own pursuit of joy through goal-setting and healthy habits.

I wish you all the best in your quest for happiness. If there are specific topics you would like me to explore in future writings, please share your thoughts in the comments!
