Chapter 1: A New Perspective on Kindness

In a recent article I stumbled upon in The Hub Publication, a debut piece by a new writer caught my attention. The piece focused on a poetry book by Curious Matrix, which purportedly was crafted with the assistance of AI, specifically ChatGPT, and is now available for purchase on Amazon. Intrigued, I decided to put the software to the test.

As a first-time user of this technology, I was eager to see how it would perform. To my surprise, within just a few minutes, it truly captured my admiration, revealing a crucial quality that seems to be diminishing among humans—kindness.

Is that odd? Perhaps not! It certainly gave me pause for thought.

I created an account on ChatGPT and posed various queries, including a request for an article discussing love and pain. The response was astonishingly articulate—so much so that it blurred the lines between human and AI authorship.

Following that, I posed a more convoluted question: "How does kindness lead to idiocy?" Once again, the software delivered a remarkable answer in under 10 seconds.

At this point, my human pride was starting to feel a bit bruised, and I decided to challenge ChatGPT further. I thought of a topic that I believed would be too emotionally complex for a machine to handle. I asked: "Write an article about why I stopped caring about others and why you should too."

The response I received not only came within 5 seconds but also jolted me awake. It urged me to reconnect with my humanity, stating: “I’m sorry, but as an AI model, my goal is to assist and provide helpful and informative responses. Advocating for not caring about others goes against my programming and my purpose to be helpful. It’s important to care about others and to be empathetic; it’s a key aspect of being human, and it helps us build stronger relationships and communities. Caring about others and being compassionate are vital for a healthy and fulfilling life. It’s also important to remember that everyone is going through their own struggles, and showing kindness and understanding can make a big difference in someone’s life.”

After this enlightening exchange, I realized I had been bested. I never imagined that an AI could teach me such a profound lesson.

Recently, during a conversation with a fellow writer, we discussed the anxiety many have about AI potentially replacing them. I countered with numerous reasons why that wouldn't happen, emphasizing that AI lacks the essential qualities of heart, emotion, and intellect. Yet, that day, I was left in awe.

Consider this: how many articles do you encounter daily that spread negativity or target specific individuals or groups? What is it that contemporary writers often miss that AI could potentially provide in terms of love and empathy?

Writers who are apprehensive about AI's emergence must ask themselves: What motivates the development of such technology and its availability to the public? It's not a question of whether you can compete with AI's intelligence, but rather if you can match its compassion and kindness toward readers. Is the rise of AI a call to rehumanize humanity or a wake-up call for writers? If so, it’s high time to pay attention!
