Chapter 1: A Family Discussion on AI

While engaging in a conversation about homework with my 13-year-old son, the subject of artificial intelligence (AI) came up naturally. His phone's app history revealed that he had interacted with a chatbot, although he admitted he only tried it once out of curiosity. His interest, however, leaned more towards the AI features integrated into Snapchat.

His reflections on AI mirrored a broader concern: “Why should I study or pursue a career if AI is going to take our jobs?” Coupled with worries that humanity might become less intelligent due to an over-reliance on AI, his sentiments echoed the widespread fears commonly discussed in society.

I responded by explaining that technology, beginning with basic calculators, has always aimed to enhance our lives. We explored historical examples, like the industrial revolution, to highlight how fear and anxiety have accompanied every major technological advancement. Yet, humanity has consistently demonstrated an impressive ability to adapt and grow.

From my perspective, I view AI as a significant opportunity with far more advantages than drawbacks. While education and career pathways will undoubtedly shift, this change need not be negative. It reminds me of when tech companies began offering certifications as legitimate alternatives to traditional college degrees, leading to considerable success for many individuals.

An intriguing notion shared by a YouTuber struck a chord with me: the apprehension that AI could reduce left-brain activity. Ironically, this could lead to an increase in emotional intelligence (EQ) and intuition—qualities that are becoming increasingly valuable in our interconnected society.

To illustrate this, I recounted a story from J. Krishnamurti about a disciple who departed from his guru, only to return years later boasting about learning to walk on water. The guru's response was both simple and profound: “You could achieve that by hiring the boatman for a penny.” While amusing, this tale conveys a deeper lesson about making intelligent use of our resources to reach our goals with minimal effort.

Predicting the future trajectory of AI resembles crafting the storyline of a sci-fi film. While we cannot accurately forecast AI's exact path, we can be certain that human significance will not be diminished. This idea resonates with the ironic dependence on AI as portrayed by HAL 9000 in “2001: A Space Odyssey”.

Such conversations are essential in dispelling myths and fears surrounding AI, fostering a perspective that sees it as an opportunity rather than a threat. Embracing AI as part of our future could lead to a society characterized by innovation, inclusivity, and collective growth.
