What Exactly is a Browser Extension?

For those unfamiliar with browser extensions, they act like plugins that enhance the capabilities of your browser. By adding small software modules (extensions), you can tailor your browser to better suit your individual needs. Essentially, you're customizing your browser instead of using it in its default state. Extensions generally add features to websites, but they can also eliminate unwanted elements, like pop-up advertisements.

Most likely, you are using one of three major web browsers: - Chrome (by Google) - Safari (by Apple) - Edge (by Microsoft)

This article will focus on Google Chrome, which is the most widely used of the three. The Chrome Web Store offers around 176,608 extensions. Although some are created by Google, many are developed by third-party programmers. Hence, it’s essential to be cautious about security and privacy when installing new extensions, as you grant these modules access to your browser data. Always check the website and reviews before installation.

Rest assured, the eight extensions I’m about to introduce are trustworthy.

How to Install an Extension?

Installing a browser extension is straightforward. Simply click on one of the links provided below and follow the instructions. Once installed, the extension will appear next to your search bar, and you can choose to pin or unpin it based on your preference. You can activate the extension with a single click whenever needed.

For most of these browser extensions, you’ll need to create a user profile. Some extensions are free, while others offer premium features. However, installing the extension itself is always free.

1. Momentum

Momentum Dash enhances your standard browser homepage with a personal dashboard that includes to-do lists, weather updates, and daily inspiration. Each time you open your browser or a new tab, you’ll land on this personalized dashboard, which features a new visual and motivational quote each day. You can add your primary focus for the day, set a Pomodoro timer, and include shortcuts to your favorite websites and apps. It’s a refreshing way to start your day compared to the typical Google search page.

2. Loom

Loom is an excellent tool for recording quick videos of your screen and camera. It’s especially useful for asynchronous communication and is a must-have for those working with remote teams. Sometimes, you might want to visually explain something without hopping on a call; with the Loom extension, you can start recording your screen with one click, while your face appears in the corner, explaining your content.

3. Readwise Reader

Developed by Readwise, Readwise Reader is an effective read-later app. It allows you to save interesting articles, videos, recipes, and more with just one click. The main advantage is that it enables you to consume content on your own time, helping you escape the constant urge to react to whatever is immediately in front of you.

Note: Readwise Reader is currently in beta; you can sign up for early access. You must first register for Readwise and follow specific instructions to download the extensions. Another great read-later app with a browser extension is Instapaper.

4. MyMind

MyMind is perfect for visually bookmarking content. Previously, when I encountered a visual I wanted to save, I would store it on my desktop, resulting in disorganized folders I avoided reopening. MyMind simplifies visual bookmarking: just right-click any image on the web or social media and select “add to my mind.” The image is then saved with an AI-driven tagging system, allowing you to easily track and utilize your saved visuals later.

5. Grammarly

For non-native English speakers like myself, Grammarly is essential. This cloud-based writing assistant checks for spelling, grammar, punctuation, clarity, engagement, and delivery mistakes in real-time. By installing the browser extension, you ensure that your writing is automatically checked for errors wherever you write. The tool also provides insights into the tone and style of your writing, highlighting areas for improvement.

6. 1Password

As we increasingly rely on the internet for various aspects of our lives, a password manager becomes essential for maintaining complex and varied passwords for all your accounts. With 1Password, you only need to remember one password, as it securely stores all your other passwords and important information. The browser extension automatically fills in your credentials while you browse, along with other stored details, such as credit card information and addresses.

7. Twemex

If you’re a Twitter user, Twemex can significantly enhance your experience. It replaces the standard sidebar with a contextual sidebar that displays a user’s most popular tweets, rather than their recent posts. Additionally, it simplifies keyword searches on Twitter, allowing you to find content from specific users or topics easily.

8. ColdTurkey

One of the biggest challenges with technology is maintaining focus on tasks that require deep concentration, such as writing. To combat this, I use website blockers like ColdTurkey. Unlike other blockers that can be cumbersome, ColdTurkey allows you to set up blocks for specific apps and websites with ease, enabling you to concentrate on your work without distractions.
