The Exciting Evolution of the iPad Pro: A Comprehensive Review

Written on

Chapter 1: Introduction to the iPad Pro

After waiting months, the iPad Pro finally took center stage during Apple’s Spring Loaded event. As a long-time user of the iPad Pro, I was thrilled to see what they had in store, eagerly anticipating when I could upgrade. My current 12.9-inch iPad Pro from 2018 (1 TB with 6 GB of RAM) is still functioning well, though it has a peculiar battery issue that remains unresolved. Despite this, it fits seamlessly into my writing routine and feels like a natural extension of my creativity. As I explored the details of the new iPad Pro on my older device, I found myself questioning whether an upgrade was truly necessary.

To help you make a decision, I'll discuss several key aspects of the iPad:

  1. Display

    1.1 Design

  2. M1 Chip

    2.1 Storage and RAM

    2.2 Connectivity

    2.3 Cameras

    2.4 Audio

    2.5 Battery Life

    2.6 Future Software

  3. Accessories — Magic Keyboard

Let's dive in!

Section 1.1: The Display Dilemma

The display is the primary reason I am considering upgrading to the iPad Pro. The Liquid Retina Display on previous models is impressive, and the 11-inch version maintains this quality. However, the introduction of the Liquid Retina XDR Display (Mini LED) is a game changer.

Liquid Retina XDR Display

This new display technology addresses some of my previous complaints. Watching movies on my current iPad often results in dark grey bars at the top and bottom due to the backlighting of the LCD. The Mini LED technology enhances the viewing experience with local dimming zones, producing deeper blacks similar to OLED screens found on iPhones. Additionally, the ability to display HDR content opens up new possibilities, although this feature hasn't been essential for my needs thus far.

Is the new display worth the upgrade? For now, I would say no. The current screen meets my needs, and while HDR is undoubtedly the future, it’s not a must-have for everyone. However, for professionals requiring precision in video and photo editing, this upgrade may be worthwhile.

Subsection 1.1.1: Design Considerations

Apple hasn't highlighted this, but comparing the 2018 and 2021 models reveals that the newer iPad Pro is slightly thicker and heavier.

This added weight may be a consideration for those who prefer to use the iPad handheld, as I often do.

Section 1.2: The Power of the M1 Chip

The M1 chip has generated significant buzz, and after using an M1 MacBook Air, I understand why. The performance is outstanding, and the chip's integration across devices signifies a unified approach from Apple.

M1 Chip Performance

However, the question remains: does this chip drastically change the user experience? My A12X-powered iPad Pro is still impressively fast, and unless iPadOS 15 introduces substantial new features, I don't see enough reason to upgrade.

If you're using an older iPad and want to experience the capabilities of a Pro model, the M1 will undoubtedly impress.

Subsection 2.1: Storage and RAM Upgrades

My current device has 1 TB of storage, which feels ample, but the newer models offer up to 16 GB of RAM, a significant increase. This suggests exciting developments for iPadOS 15, which could potentially utilize this enhanced capability.

Section 2.2: Connectivity Enhancements

The addition of Thunderbolt 3 and USB 4 support is a notable upgrade, expanding connectivity options for external devices.

Thunderbolt and USB 4 Connectivity

Furthermore, Wi-Fi 6 improves speeds, while the introduction of 5G is more relevant in certain regions than others.

Section 2.3: Camera Features

The rear camera remains unchanged, which doesn't significantly impact my usage, but the front-facing camera has been upgraded to 12 MP, now featuring a wide-angle lens that introduces the Centre Stage functionality.

Improved Front Camera

This enhancement is particularly beneficial for virtual meetings, allowing for a more dynamic user experience.

Section 2.4: Audio Capabilities

The microphone quality on the iPad Pro has always impressed me, and the new models claim to feature studio-quality microphones. However, while the audio output has improved with Dolby Atmos, it lacks spatial audio.

Section 2.5: Battery Performance

I had hoped for better battery life with the M1 chip, especially considering the impressive performance of the M1 MacBook models. While Apple claims 10 hours of battery life, it can be inadequate for intensive use.

Section 2.6: Software Prospects

The M1 chip sets the stage for exciting software possibilities, leading to questions about the iPad's identity as either a mobile device or a full-fledged computer. Anticipation for iPadOS 15 is high, as users hope for improved external display support, interactive widgets, and professional software applications.

Chapter 2: Accessories and Final Thoughts

The new Magic Keyboard comes in white, which raises concerns about durability for everyday use.

Magic Keyboard Design

Additionally, the older Magic Keyboard will not fit the new iPad Pro due to its slight increase in thickness, necessitating a new purchase for anyone upgrading.

Conclusion

Should you consider upgrading to the iPad Pro? If you're in the market for a new device, this is undoubtedly the best iPad Apple has released. For casual users, the 2020 iPad Air may suffice. However, if your work involves video or photo editing where screen accuracy is crucial, the new model is worth your attention.

As for me, I won't be upgrading just yet. My 2018 iPad Pro still meets my needs, and unless the battery issue escalates, I'm content for now. It's reassuring to see Apple's direction for the iPad, ensuring that whenever I do upgrade, it will align perfectly with my requirements.
