Embracing Self-Care: A Transformative Year of Growth

Chapter 1: Listening to My Inner Self

I entered my 36th year feeling quite down. While I won’t delve into the specifics, what matters is that I acknowledged that sadness. Day by day, I chose to pursue activities that brought me joy and nourished my spirit. I focused on myself and followed the energy that excited me.

Now at 37, I can affirm that my 36th year was the most impactful of my life. Numerous significant events took place during that time.

I welcomed my dog, Egon, into my life.

I ramped up my business to a full roster of clients at my standard rates.

I carved out a new niche focusing on late-identified autism.

I engaged in a feminist marketing program, immersing myself in the work.

I strengthened my accountability networks, fostering deeper friendships and creating new connections.

I began sharing my essays on LinkedIn, engaging with inspiring individuals.

I completed all my licensure requirements for the ATR, ATR-BC, REAT, and LPC.

I joined Medium and started publishing my work there.

I deepened my friendships further.

I confronted and resolved significant family conflicts.

I laid the groundwork for a presentation at a national conference.

I navigated a health scare related to cancer.

That last experience was unexpected and unwelcome. In truth, most of these developments weren’t part of any goals I set; they emerged organically as I grew. This has been the most beautiful aspect of my 36th year.

It has been a time of tuning into what brings me joy and what doesn’t, followed by making necessary adjustments. I cleared my calendar of unnecessary commitments and directed my energy toward what invigorated me.

I embarked on various projects, pausing some while persisting with others, such as writing 360 essays and unexpectedly generating side income through Medium.

As I concluded my 36th year, I felt exhausted—not burnt out, but rather a healthy kind of fatigue that comes from a mind engaged in what it loves.

I was waking up at 6 a.m. every day, eager to write, implementing countless ideas, and presenting myself with the power and presence I desired in my client interactions.

Humans are not designed to operate at full throttle continuously; we need breaks, slower moments, and periods for reflection.

To honor my 37th birthday, I treated myself to a digital detox trip—no virtual devices, including my laptop—visiting a friend in Scotland. This set a positive tone for my 37th year, which has thus far balanced moments of slowing down with bursts of activity. I’m doing my best to prioritize myself, as attending to my own needs seems to create a ripple effect of positivity in all areas of my life.
