Discovering Apple’s Find My Features: What You Need to Know

Written on

Chapter 1: An Overview of Find My

Find My has evolved significantly since its introduction in 2019. Apple has continuously enhanced its functionality, integrating it more seamlessly into their ecosystem. Recently, Apple combined the Find My Friends and Find My iPhone apps into one unified application, available for both iPhone and iPad users. This integration comes with several new capabilities, including the ability to locate a powered-off iPhone or one without an active connection.

As you familiarize yourself with the current features of Find My, you may find it beneficial to understand its various functionalities.

Apple Find My app interface

Locating Your Lost Devices

The Find My app is inherently built into iOS, ensuring it's readily available on your iPhone or iPad. Most Apple products, including the MagSafe Wallet, are compatible with Find My. Upon opening the app, you'll encounter a user-friendly layout divided into four primary tabs at the bottom of the screen.

The first tab, labeled ‘People,’ allows you to locate friends. Following this is the tab dedicated to your devices, followed by the ‘Items’ tab, where you can view nearby Bluetooth-enabled items like AirTags. The final tab, ‘Me,’ contains the app’s settings.

All devices associated with your iCloud account are displayed under the Devices tab, marked on a map that you can zoom in on for precise locations. A simple tap on any device will provide options such as playing a sound or receiving directions. If you choose the ‘Mark As Lost’ option, it will immediately disable Apple Pay, and you can also erase the device remotely if necessary.

Separation Alerts: A Double-Edged Sword

Many users find the Separation Alerts feature to be somewhat bothersome. For instance, I often receive notifications when I move from one room to another, reminding me that I've left my iPhone behind. While this feature is undoubtedly useful, it can be quite irritating on a daily basis. Fortunately, you can manage these alerts for individual devices by selecting the device from the list and adjusting your notification preferences.

Family Sharing Benefits

Despite the occasional annoyance from Separation Alerts, there are significant advantages, especially for families. With Family Sharing activated, you can view all devices belonging to your family members under your account.

Finding Friends Made Easy

One of the original features of Find My allows you to locate friends, which can be especially handy. I recently utilized this feature while trying to find an interviewee for my podcast. As long as they have shared their location with you, the app will display their whereabouts and give you the option to share your location in return.

To share your location, simply click the plus sign next to the People heading, select from your contacts, and choose how long you'd like to share your location—from one hour to permanently. You can also enable notifications for specific individuals to stay updated on their movements.

The ‘Me’ Tab Functionality

The ‘Me’ tab displays your current location and allows you to manage your data-sharing preferences.

Tracking Devices Without a Connection

This is where Apple’s ecosystem truly shines. The Find My Network enables you to locate devices that are offline by utilizing Bluetooth and nearby Apple devices. For example, if you misplace a device that is turned off or out of battery, it can still connect to other Apple devices nearby, which act as location beacons—even if you accidentally left Airplane mode on.

In most cases, Offline Finding is activated by default. If you wish to turn it off, navigate to Settings > ID > Find My iPhone to find the toggle option. Apple has not disclosed all the technical details behind this feature, but it was developed with a strong emphasis on user privacy and security.

Ensuring Functionality Even Without Power

If your device is switched off or runs out of battery, Find My still retains its functionality. When launched with iOS 13, the app enabled users to locate devices without needing Wi-Fi or cell service by utilizing the proximity of other Apple devices. Today, with the introduction of the U1 chip, Bluetooth, or NFC, Find My continues to operate effectively, even with a powered-off device. However, note that the tracking capability in this scenario may last only about five hours.

Tracking Wiped Devices

If your device is stolen and subsequently wiped, it remains traceable due to Activation Lock, which requires your Apple ID and password. As long as Activation Lock is active, the lost or stolen device will still appear in your Find My list.

This video explores the new features of iOS 18, showcasing over 500 updates and improvements, enhancing your experience with Find My and other functionalities.

Helping Others with Find My

Find My also includes a feature that allows you to assist friends in locating their lost devices. Under the ‘Me’ tab, you can find the option to ‘Help A Friend,’ which takes you to icloud.com, enabling them to sign in and access Find My.

AirTags and Their Integration

AirTags can be tracked through the ‘Items’ tab, which has been specifically designed for tracking Bluetooth-enabled devices, such as AirTags. The Lost Mode feature allows AirTags to use the Find My network for tracking, utilizing billions of devices to maintain connectivity.

Anti-Tracking Features

The Find My app also includes safeguards against unwanted tracking. You will receive alerts if an unknown Bluetooth item is detected moving with you, helping ensure no one is secretly tracking you with an AirTag or similar device.

Returning Lost Devices

If you discover a device equipped with an AirTag, simply scan the AirTag using your iPhone to send notifications to its rightful owner.

Conclusion

While the Find My app may not be the flashiest among Apple's offerings, it is an essential tool for anyone who has ever lost an Apple device. Its comprehensive features cater to nearly every possible scenario, with a steadfast commitment to privacy at its core. Thanks to the Find My app, tracking down lost or stolen devices has never been easier.
