As someone who has both immigrated and developed a deep appreciation for African culture, I feel equipped to discuss this matter. Surprisingly, just two African nations currently have higher birth rates than all the Han Chinese and native Europeans combined. Yet, Africa is not limited to just these two; it is a diverse continent made up of fifty-four nations, many of which are experiencing similar demographic growth. This surge is not only in population but extends to advancements in economics, education, and scientific endeavors. While this reality fills me with pride, it also brings a sense of apprehension.

Historically, when nations like Germany and Russia began to outpace France and England, it led to two world wars and the emergence of perilous ideologies. I am not suggesting that Africa will necessarily follow this path, but I do foresee it being a catalyst for a multitude of unpredictable and transformative changes worldwide. The shifts we may witness could surpass those of the last century, introducing new philosophies, cuisines, fashions, and challenges. It astonishes me that this topic remains largely undiscussed, and few speculate on how such changes will affect our lives.

The Growing Divide

One striking aspect of Africa's growth is the stagnation of the middle class, a phenomenon mirrored in many regions worldwide. During my childhood, most individuals I encountered were small business owners, farmers, or homeowners. Whether it was a few hectares of land, a quaint shop, or a modest house, these people enjoyed independence and had a voice within their communities. Today, however, many seem dependent on large corporations, organizations, or government entities, which limits their ability to express dissent.

In a world where families are just one or two paychecks away from financial ruin, few dare to challenge the status quo. The elite class of this new society remains insulated, often disconnected from the realities faced by those less fortunate. Historically, feudal lords interacted with their communities, but today’s elite inhabit gated neighborhoods, attend exclusive schools, and consume media tailored to their social class. How can democracy thrive without a robust middle class? What future awaits the next generation if we are left with only impoverished urban areas and monotonous apartment complexes?

The Rise of Bureaucracy

Bureaucracies often disregard the middle class, which they perceive as unnecessary. Their existence hinges on two primary needs: ongoing issues and a reliant populace. Rather than genuinely addressing problems, their aim is self-perpetuation. This is akin to the historical witch doctors who profited from community fears about weather—promising prayers for rain without ever constructing a dam or creating fertilizers.

In the same vein, corporations could take meaningful steps to lower carbon emissions, such as providing facilities for employees to shower and store bicycles. Governments could invest in sustainable energy sources like nuclear power, yet discussions often remain focused on non-existent green technologies while regulations stifle local initiatives like backyard gardening.

Furthermore, as a person of color, I seek fairness and respect, irrespective of superficial differences among individuals. The race of basketball players or the ethnic backgrounds of mathematicians do not concern me, as long as everyone is afforded equal opportunities. The narrative that promotes division and resentment, blaming others for our challenges, lacks constructive value. Unfortunately, those who champion such divisive ideologies continue to thrive. The pressing questions remain: What will happen when these bureaucracies collapse under their own weight, and how many will suffer in the interim?
