Chapter 1: The Evolution of Work in 2021

The global pandemic and various social issues have significantly altered the landscape of work across the globe. As a result, organizations have undergone remarkable transformations in how they operate. Key drivers of these changes include technological advancements, economic conditions, evolving workforce demographics, and the ongoing challenges posed by COVID-19.

In order to gauge the real effects of technology and business processes on daily work life, ABBYY commissioned Opinium Research in November 2020 to conduct a survey involving 4,000 workers across the U.S., UK, France, and Germany from over 20 different industries, including IT, Education, Healthcare, and Manufacturing. While numerous surveys focus on executive insights and analyst perspectives, this study aimed to capture the experiences of everyday employees.

To quote a notable finding from the survey, "The pandemic has reshaped our work lives in ways we never anticipated."

Section 1.1: Challenges Faced by Employees

According to the survey results, a striking 74% of participants reported facing challenges at work during the pandemic. When asked about the root causes of their difficulties, 40% attributed their struggles to insufficient information regarding tasks and solutions, 32% mentioned inadequate IT tools, and 27% felt isolated.

Surprisingly, a significant factor contributing to workplace difficulties was identified as processes. While many believe that business processes are designed to enhance efficiency and compliance, nearly half of the respondents (48%) cited ineffective processes as a source of frustration, with a quarter considering leaving their jobs due to this issue. Additionally, 36% felt that existing processes wasted time and hindered their productivity.

Section 1.2: The Role of Technology

Another compelling insight from the survey was the rapid adoption of technology during the pandemic. A remarkable 64% of respondents reported that their organizations swiftly implemented new technologies and processes during lockdown to alleviate the pressures of remote work. Tools facilitating digitized processes and automation garnered a positive response from 76% of participants, particularly those that helped monitor employee tasks and performance.

Section 2.1: Remote Work Becomes the Norm

Before the pandemic, remote work was not common; however, it has now become essential for maintaining business continuity. This shift has fostered improvements in employees' work-life balance, leading to increased interest in topics like "work-from-home culture" and "work-from-home mental health."

Section 2.2: The Rise of Hybrid Work Models

The hybrid work model is gaining traction, allowing employees to work from the office, home, or other locations. While collaboration is enhanced in the office, the flexibility of remote work is highly valued. According to Slack’s Remote Employee Experience Index, only 11.6% of employees wish to return to traditional office settings, while 72.2% prefer a hybrid model.

Section 2.3: Flexible Work Hours

The pandemic has necessitated flexible working hours, especially for employees with children engaged in distance learning. This has resulted in varied work schedules that encompass both daytime and nighttime hours, underscoring the importance of adaptability in maintaining employee motivation and productivity.

Section 2.4: Digital Innovations

The accelerated adoption of security and efficiency technologies has transformed operations across industries. Many companies have embraced technological innovations designed to support remote work, such as AI-driven virtual assistants and secure messaging systems for real-time communication.

Section 2.5: Mental Health Initiatives

Businesses are increasingly recognizing the need to support their employees' mental health and well-being. This includes implementing flexible hours, additional time off, and regular check-ins to foster a healthier workplace environment.

Section 2.6: Cybersecurity Concerns

As organizations shift focus to digital events, the need for robust cybersecurity measures has intensified. With employees accessing company systems remotely, businesses must invest in strong IT systems to protect against digital threats, including viruses and ransomware.

Cybersecurity measures for remote work environments

As we navigate through 2021, it is clear that the workplace is undergoing significant transformation. The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated innovation and positioned technology at the forefront of business priorities, leading to new cultural norms and practices in the workplace.
