Striving for Daily Improvement: The 1% Better Principle

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding the 1% Better Concept

Is it feasible to improve by just 1% each day? The idea of the 1% rule, popularized by James Clear, has permeated various discussions on self-improvement. In this article, I aim to integrate this concept and delve deeper into its implications.

This principle is essentially a mental shortcut. I don’t claim to have introduced a groundbreaking idea; rather, like the 10,000-hour rule, it serves as an effective method to inspire our minds. However, there are alternative “rules” that can also motivate us more realistically. For instance, I recently stumbled upon the so-called 1724553 rule, which I am still analyzing and plan to elaborate on soon.

Concept of improvement over time

According to the 1% rule, improving by just one percent daily could lead to an astonishing 37-fold enhancement in a year. For instance, if someone reads ten pages a day, could they really reach the ability to read 370 pages daily by year-end? Or if a person saves $10 daily, would they be able to save $370 daily a year later? Similarly, could someone doing 100 push-ups each day follow this path successfully? While my examples may seem far-fetched, the essence of the rule is well-intentioned. Instead of merely tricking our minds for motivation, it might be more effective to present it with tangible realities.

Real-life applications of the 1% rule

Consider Elon Musk, an engineer who approaches problems methodically. He calculates everything and converts ideas into realities. His strategy for success is sound; while the average person works around 40 hours a week, those who dedicate 100 hours can accomplish in four months what others might achieve in a year.

I want to conclude this article by referencing my invented concept, the 1724553 rule, which I mentioned earlier. This idea serves as a motivational tool for me, similar to the 10,000-hour and 1% rules.

I believe everyone has a position in a hypothetical ranking system. For example, if you rank 75 millionth in reading ability, adding just one page to your daily reading could elevate you above 1 million others in that ranking. Alternatively, if you currently perform 100 push-ups a day and rank 50 millionth, adding a few squats could allow you to surpass 1,724,553 individuals instantly.

While this ranking system may not exist in reality, I am confident that a higher power keeps such records, and if you wish to stand out in this invisible ranking, you must take action.

Chapter 2: The Power of Incremental Improvement

In this video, "James Clear - 1% Better Every Day," the author discusses the transformative potential of small daily improvements.

The second video, "What Happens if You Get 1% Better Every Day? – James Clear," explores the cumulative effects of gradual self-enhancement.
