Logging into Facebook has become a routine for me. I check notifications, respond to comments, and mindlessly scroll for what feels like an eternity. After closing the app, I often forget the real-world task I was about to tackle. It's a cycle: open Facebook, see the same meme I viewed moments ago, and then realize that my notifications are empty. "Oh right," I remind myself, "I was just here."

This pattern repeats itself when I switch to Instagram. I was the last among my friends to adopt a smartphone. I recall the embarrassment of pulling out my old flip phone at work, only to be met with a patronizing comment about still playing Snake. It wasn't until I broke my Nokia that I finally upgraded to a smartphone, albeit reluctantly. My mother's warnings about technology's dangers lingered in my mind, particularly regarding privacy.

Despite my initial hesitance, I quickly fell into the trap of social media addiction. The rush of dopamine from likes and shares became my new normal, feeding my need for validation. Fast forward nine years, and I find myself stuck in a cycle of repetitive app usage. The issues stemming from social media's omnipresence are extensive, and while my motivations for quitting are complex, I hope to shed light on the real problems that social media perpetuates.

Research suggests that social media's impact is more pronounced among girls due to two main reasons: their tendency to internalize aggression and the exposure to unrealistic beauty standards.

In the past, girls compared themselves to models in magazines, but now they're pitted against an endless stream of digitally altered images. Filters allow for drastic alterations to their appearance, leading to a new obsession: Snapchat Dysmorphia. The psychological effects of social media are increasingly evident, especially among Gen Z, whose developing brains are constantly bombarded by digital stimuli.

As a younger Millennial, I also felt the impact, albeit not as intensely as Gen Z. The repercussions of social media on mental health are undeniable, affecting even those who entered the online world after their formative years.

Section 1.2: The Political Divide

In 2021, 55% of American social media users reported feeling exhausted by political discussions, a notable rise from 46% in 2019. The divisive nature of social media has contributed significantly to this polarization. After the introduction of the "Share" button on Facebook in 2012, users were exposed to content that incited strong emotions rather than benign updates about friends' lives.

According to Jonathan Haidt, author of "Why the Past 10 Years of American Life Have Been Uniquely Stupid," this shift has fostered a mob mentality online, where users engage in heated arguments with little regard for the humanity of their opponents. The anonymity of social media allows for the dehumanization of others, leading to a loss of nuance and civility.

The rise of social media has correlated with increasing political polarization, making it easier to predict a person's beliefs based on their responses to a single question. Our collective willingness to engage in constructive dialogue has diminished, all for the sake of profit-driven algorithms.

Chapter 2: The Decline of Creativity

Our reliance on social media to alleviate boredom has eradicated the concept of true boredom, which is essential for fostering creativity. The lack of mental space leaves little room for imagination and innovative thinking.

As a younger Millennial, I see the stark contrast between my childhood and today’s digital landscape. I long for the return of creativity and imagination that flourished without the constant barrage of notifications.
