Navigating Life Lessons from My Chaotic Roommate Experience

Chapter 1: Embracing the Journey
Before relocating to Canada in 2020, I struggled with anxiety, frequently visiting various psychiatrists back home. Leaving my country and family weighed heavily on me, making it feel like I was escaping rather than seeking a new beginning. Fast forward two years, I’ve learned a significant truth: you can't escape your issues if they stem from within. It’s like carrying your problems wherever you go.
In this wild journey in Canada, I’ve found gratitude in the friendships I’ve cultivated. My roommates, whom I affectionately call my chosen family, often react with amusement at my sentiment. Over the years, they’ve grown accustomed to my expressions of affection.
Living with two guys has its quirks. Our home doesn’t fall into the category of filthy; it’s usually tidy. However, chaos often erupts in the kitchen when culinary creativity strikes. One particular roommate struggles to tidy up after cooking, especially when sauces are involved. Yet, he’s also the one who has rescued spiders for me, brought me my favorite tea, and even offered to cover my rent when technology failed me.
Through these experiences, I’ve accumulated a myriad of life lessons—perhaps even too many. One crucial takeaway is that “we are multifaceted.” Our identities are not defined solely by our errors or successes, just as my roommate is more than the mess he sometimes leaves behind.
Section 1.1: Learning Together
During one rare evening when all three of us were at home, we found ourselves in the kitchen preparing dinner. It felt like a genuine home moment, a significant milestone for single immigrants. When I asked my roommate to place the chicken in the oven, he smiled back, admitting it was his first experience with an oven.
Later, while enjoying a lively night in our backyard, I made an ill-advised joke that could have led to serious backlash if I had any public standing. To my surprise, he laughed and remarked, “It’s because we’ve had so many take-outs; no one taught us!” That realization struck a chord with me.

Section 1.2: Reflecting on Standards
When we discussed cleaning the stove after cooking, his response was insightful: “If it’s not hurting anyone, what’s the fuss?” I realized that my desire for order was, in fact, a personal quirk rather than a universal need. While I appreciate a tidy home, I also recognized my tendency to be overly self-involved. Living in Toronto, surrounded by diverse cultures, has taught me the value of understanding and respecting differences.

How To Deal With A Messy, Stubborn Roommate
This video provides valuable strategies for addressing challenges with messy roommates, fostering open communication, and maintaining a peaceful living situation.
As I reflect on my experiences, I remember a time when a heated discussion about household responsibilities took place among us. We pointed fingers and debated who had time to clean. After 15 minutes of arguing, one roommate exclaimed, “We could have spent these 15 minutes cleaning!” It was a lightbulb moment; we quickly tidied up the space in just 15 minutes.
Despite being an adult, I often struggle with maintaining my personal space. However, that day serves as a reminder: just a short amount of focused time can lead to significant change.
Section 2.1: Finding Connection
At times, I feel like an outsider in a foreign land. Yet, the presence of my roommates makes the experience more manageable. They provide a support system that allows for social interaction, even in a constrained environment, filled with shared laughter and late-night conversations.
The lessons I’ve gleaned from my messy roommate are merely a glimpse of what is possible when you genuinely engage with others. Connecting with people was a challenge for my younger self, but she would be proud to see the growth I’ve achieved.
