Mindset Shifts to Elevate Your Online Writing Career

Embracing Success through Mindset Changes

In today's digital landscape, anyone can venture into online writing. However, only a select few achieve remarkable success. I began my online writing journey in 2014, yet it took me six arduous years before I could fully commit to it as a profession. In this article, I will share three subtle mindset shifts that have propelled me to levels of success I once deemed unattainable. Whether you're just starting or have been writing online for a while, these insights could be invaluable for your career.

Section 1.1: Think Small to Achieve Big

At first glance, this may seem counterintuitive. In 2021, I aspired to create a freelance writing business. However, each time I envisioned the potential, I became overwhelmed with questions like:

  • How will I manage taxes?
  • How will I coordinate multiple writers?
  • Can I keep track of more than five clients?

Despite these fears, I have successfully launched my dream venture with three satisfied clients, a team of five writers, and a content manager. While it may not be a massive success yet, I can see a clear path forward.

What changed for me? I shifted my focus from thinking BIG to thinking SMALL. When we contemplate lofty goals, our subconscious often feels out of control, prompting us to overanalyze every detail. This leads to a cycle of fear and doubt, making it difficult to take action.

Instead, concentrate on what you can do today to move closer to your aspirations. Embrace uncertainty with curiosity rather than fear. Replace thoughts of “I’m worried that…” with “I’m excited to see what will happen when…” By focusing on manageable tasks, you can gradually construct the path to your goals.

Section 1.2: Your Time is Yours Alone

After a busy weekend, I found myself drained on Monday morning, preferring to take it slow. When a friend, accustomed to long hours in the tech industry, questioned my leisurely day, I felt guilty.

However, it's essential to recognize that everyone has their unique approach to work. Just because my friend adheres to a strict work ethic doesn't mean I have to justify my need for a break. It's vital to understand that taking time off is not only acceptable but necessary for rejuvenation.

Your mind might trick you into feeling unproductive, but breaks are crucial for mental health and creativity. Follow your energy and respect your limits. As long as you meet deadlines, don't succumb to the hustle culture's pressure to constantly be working.

Section 1.3: The Importance of Planning Ahead

Have you ever found yourself in a waiting room, planning your next 48 hours of work or vacation? That's my reality as a full-time writer.

With the demand for consistent online presence, taking a few days off can become overwhelming. To alleviate this stress, I learned the importance of planning in advance. Here's a strategy that has worked for me:

  • Jot down all tasks that come to mind.
  • Schedule your content weeks or even months ahead, using tools like Hypefury to streamline the process.
  • Batch-produce content to avoid overwhelming your audience.

When you're on a break, trust your scheduling tools and focus on enjoying your time off. Engage with your audience when possible, but prioritize your well-being. Your mental health is paramount—there's only one you.
