Here’s How I Approach Mortality with a Positive Outlook

Understanding Mortality Through Optimism
This piece delves into my reflections on mortality and how I leverage it to foster a hopeful and joyful existence, even in the face of our inevitable end.
Ultimately, as we approach our final moments on this planet, our lives may transform into a dream. For some, this dream may be filled with joy, for others, it may carry regrets, and for some, it could even be a nightmare. Each of us occupies a unique position on this spectrum.
The undeniable truth is that we are all mortal. One day, we will confront our last moments on Earth.
In our fast-paced modern world, distractions often obscure this reality, leading many of us to forget our mortality. Ironically, some behave as though they will live indefinitely. A striking example can be seen in some elderly individuals who, despite having sufficient wealth, prioritize saving for the future at the expense of their health and happiness.
From a scientific standpoint, our genetics are designed for decay and eventual death, evidenced by the shortening of telomeres—specific DNA structures. While this reality may seem disheartening, many stoic thinkers argue that contemplating our mortality can paradoxically spark joy and passion.
I touched upon this existential concern in the accompanying article. This philosophical dilemma has plagued humanity ever since we developed cognitive thought. Philosophers, scientists, and technologists have all wrestled with this issue, resulting in conflicting insights.
However, some individuals find solace in creative ways to address this existential crisis. For instance, prominent stoic philosophers advocated for regularly reflecting on our mortality. They argued that such contemplation can enhance our ability to appreciate and embrace the present.
Marcus Aurelius exemplifies this thinking, stating: "Do not think disdainfully of death, but regard it favorably. For death is simply one of the things that Nature desires."
Contemporary psychology supports the idea that living with appreciation and gratitude can mitigate negative emotions such as anxiety, fear, jealousy, and anger.
My personal approach, influenced by stoic philosophy, is to concentrate on what I can control and to refrain from worrying about what I cannot. While we cannot change our mortality, we can influence factors that contribute to joy and happiness in our lives.
The universe is filled with uncertainties. From a cosmological viewpoint, it appears that there are far more unknowns than knowns. Our understanding of the universe remains minimal—akin to a mere drop in the ocean.
Thus, the reasons behind our genetic programming for mortality remain a mystery. Yet, if we adopt an optimistic lens, we might consider that our consciousness could evolve into something greater.
While pessimists may see mortality as mere decay, I choose to view it as transformation. I cannot definitively say who is correct, but studies show that optimists tend to live longer than pessimists. Interestingly, research indicates that only 25% of our optimism is genetically determined; the remaining 75% is influenced by our responses to life's challenges.
This leaves us with a significant opportunity to shape the factors that lead to joy and happiness. I aim to ensure that my final moments are filled with pleasant dreams.
Thank you for exploring my reflections. I wish you a long and healthy life.
