Explore the Best iPad Alternatives: Why Choose Linux Over Apple

Written on

Chapter 1: The iPad Experience

As a long-time iPad user since 2012, I have gone through various models, including the iPad Mini, the initial two generations of iPad Air, and nearly every 10.5 and 11-inch iPad Pro variant. After a brief period with the latest iPad Pro, I found myself questioning the purpose of a device costing over £1000.

The iPad enforces a specific workflow and heavily leans on the Apple ecosystem. Operating outside of this framework can be quite challenging. This prompted me to explore Linux and consider whether an older Microsoft Surface running Ubuntu could serve as an alternative to my iPad, providing similar functionalities at a fraction of the cost. Surprisingly, this project has been both enjoyable and convincing, as I believe it can deliver a superior computing experience for many users compared to the iPad and iPad Pro.

Section 1.1: Performance of Ubuntu on Surface

Running Ubuntu on the Surface significantly enhances its performance. In contrast to Windows, Linux is less resource-intensive, resulting in a more responsive experience. Additionally, Ubuntu's customizability allowed me to modify the user interface to better fit my workflow. Navigating tasks on a smaller screen can be challenging enough; why should I let someone else's design choices dictate how I work?

Alternative applications for web browsing and video playback are readily available, allowing for seamless transitions between professional workflows. Unlike the iPadOS's restrictive multi-window functionality, Ubuntu offers a more fluid experience for multitasking.

Subsection 1.1.1: Effective Use of Stylus with Ubuntu

Moreover, the Surface Go's stylus integrates exceptionally well with Ubuntu. During a recent community meeting, I took notes solely on the tablet using an application called RNote, which performed admirably. The stylus (acquired second-hand) exhibited great sensitivity. I utilized the device strictly as a tablet during the meeting, but when it came time to draft an email later, I effortlessly attached the Surface keyboard cover to get back to work. This device adapts to my needs rather than the other way around.

Section 1.2: Limitations to Consider

However, it's essential to note that this is not a one-size-fits-all alternative to the iPad. The battery life doesn't match that of an iPad, and like any experimental device, minor issues arise from time to time. For instance, some adjustments are necessary to optimize the stylus experience, and finding the appropriate applications can require some searching. Typically, those inclined to purchase an iPad Pro are creative professionals or tech enthusiasts, while the Surfbuntu presents an option that is more accessible.

Chapter 2: The Versatility of Surfbuntu

The Surface Go running Ubuntu proves to be incredibly versatile, functioning well as both a work and leisure device. Although there is a slight learning curve, the benefits are substantial. This device operates smoothly without the bloat of Microsoft's operating system, offering a variety of applications that cater to both productivity and relaxation in a manner that suits individual preferences. The Surfbuntu has demonstrated that there is a viable space for a dedicated, Linux-based tablet that could appeal to a wide audience.

In the video titled "Don't Buy the M4 iPad Pro: Buy This Instead," the speaker elaborates on why potential buyers should reconsider their choices and explore alternatives that offer better value and functionality.

The second video, "STOP Buying iPads (New)," discusses the drawbacks of investing in new iPads and highlights reasons to consider different devices that might meet user needs more effectively.
