Evaluating Character: A Test for Success in Leadership Roles

Written on

Chapter 1: The Search for a Replacement

In a company undergoing a transition, a prominent manager was about to depart. The chairman was determined to find a successor who not only possessed skill but also demonstrated strong moral character. Numerous candidates came forward, yet none met the chairman’s criteria.

One day, a thirty-something man with a Ph.D. applied for the role. The chairman instructed him to arrive at the office at 4 a.m. Promptly at that hour, the man entered the lobby, finding it empty except for a solitary chair. He took a seat and began to wait.

By 9 a.m., the chairman finally arrived, greeted the applicant, and escorted him to his office.

“Are you able to write?” the chairman inquired.

“Yes,” came the reply.

The chairman then placed a pen and a blank sheet of paper before him, asking, “Could you write the word ‘money’ on that paper?”

The candidate complied, anticipating further questions, but none followed. The chairman simply observed him. Confused, the applicant asked, “Is that all?”

The chairman smiled and responded, “Yes, that concludes the test. Our HR department will be in touch. Thank you for your time.”

The candidate found the encounter peculiar and wondered about the nature of the test he had just experienced.

Later that day, the chairman revealed to the board that he had chosen a new manager. He explained his reasoning: “A Ph.D. signifies that intelligence and knowledge are not an issue. Thus, I sought to evaluate other qualities. First, I assessed his willingness to sacrifice by having him rise early, which he did. Next, I gauged his patience by making him wait for five hours without any tasks, and he managed that, too. I also wanted to see if he would show frustration upon finally meeting me, but he remained composed. Lastly, I tested his humility by asking him to write a simple word, and he did so without hesitation.”

“A candidate with a Ph.D. who also embodies sacrifice, patience, emotional stability, and humility is someone who possesses both talent and virtue. What more could I desire? Therefore, I have chosen to hire him!”

Do you find the chairman's perspective to be insightful?

Chapter 2: The Role of Character in Success

A person's character significantly influences their potential for success. Those with strong moral principles are more likely to achieve great things, while individuals lacking these traits may face limitations in their accomplishments.

While it is widely recognized that “knowledge is power,” it is essential to remember that strong character traits are equally indicative of an individual’s potential for success. In today’s world, where knowledgeable individuals are abundant, we must recognize that both knowledge and skills are crucial for wealth creation; however, we should not overlook the importance of inner qualities. These include not only the pursuit of knowledge and skill enhancement but also the development of refinement and ethical character.

The chairman's insights highlight the critical balance between character and competence in evaluating potential leaders.
