Chapter 1: A Surprising Path to Independence

It's amusing to reflect on my journey, but I'm genuinely grateful for the unexpected chances that have changed my life for the better.

Initially, I viewed bartending as merely a fun experiment or weekend gig. However, once I discovered the potential earnings, I realized it could significantly impact my finances. I began saving diligently and managed to pay down a considerable portion of my student loans.

It wasn't until I faced another layoff that bartending became my sole income source and ultimate lifeline. This situation forced me to adopt a more disciplined approach to my finances than I had before. When I worked a traditional nine-to-five job, I lacked the same level of financial awareness that I developed afterward.

Two major events contributed to my growth: the second unexpected layoff and a fallout with family members I was living with at the time, which led me to live independently for the first time. Navigating the financial responsibilities of living alone compelled me to mature quickly. I am proud of how far I've come, and as I approach my one-year anniversary of living solo, I am thankful for how bartending has facilitated my financial accomplishments.

Chapter 2: Mastering My Budgeting Strategy

I want to share my simple yet incredibly effective budgeting and tracking method to assist anyone struggling with financial management.

At the beginning of 2022, while juggling a remote job and bartending on weekends, I successfully paid nearly $9,000 toward my loans. The relief of being ahead on my payment plan was immense. My student loans are my only long-term debt, and I am eager to eliminate them swiftly. During this period, bartending provided the extra income needed to make substantial progress toward financial freedom.

Thanks to my budgeting method, I also managed to save enough to cover three months' worth of expenses. Another significant milestone was purchasing my first car—technically my second, as my mother had helped me buy my first during college. By the end of 2022, I was able to buy a secondhand vehicle outright, which felt like a major achievement.

Furthermore, I’ve expanded my emergency fund from three to five months of expenses and am closing in on my goal of six months.

The Advantages of Being a Bartender

While the benefits may differ depending on the establishment, bartending generally serves as an excellent side job.

Now, let’s discuss some of the less tangible yet impactful changes that bartending has enabled in my life. Living independently has empowered me to make choices that resonate with my values and preferences, leading to greater satisfaction and fulfillment.

For instance, I prefer to remove my shoes at the door to keep my living space clean. While it may seem trivial, I find that it significantly reduces the dirt I have to vacuum. I know this is an odd illustration, but I'm thrilled to have a space where I can enforce this practice.

Additionally, I now control the contents of my fridge and pantry. Having always desired a healthier, whole-foods-focused lifestyle, I struggled to achieve this while living with family members who handled the grocery shopping. Now, I have the freedom to stock my kitchen with nutritious options. My commitment to environmental consciousness was often challenged in a shared living situation, but bartending has afforded me the independence to align my living environment with my values.

In summary, bartending has granted me the freedom to live authentically. Although it was not the trajectory I envisioned, life took me on a different path, and for that, I am grateful.

Chapter 3: Launching My First Digital/Print Product

I have a straightforward yet impactful idea in the works, and I believe in its potential, regardless of the outcome.

While there are stereotypes surrounding bartending that may deter some from considering it a viable job, I believe these perceptions are more about individual experiences than the profession itself.
