Apple's iPad Upgrades for 2024: What to Expect and When
Written on
Introduction
The iPad has consistently ranked as one of Apple's most popular devices, earning its reputation through continuous innovation and improvement. Particularly over the last two years, the introduction of the M1 chip has significantly enhanced the iPad’s capabilities. As we approach the latter half of 2022 and the upcoming WWDC 2022 event, insights into potential iPad upgrades are beginning to emerge.
The iPad Pro
Historically, the iPad Pro received its upgrades during the Spring event, but this year saw the Air model take the spotlight instead. Anticipation is high for the Pro series, which is expected to feature Apple’s new M2 chip, although some reports suggest production challenges may delay its release. Additionally, the new iPad Pro is expected to support wireless charging, with design modifications to accommodate this feature, possibly involving a glass back or redesigning the Apple logo.
Furthermore, the 11-inch model is set to adopt the Mini-LED display currently available in the 12.9-inch version, along with improvements in battery performance.

The iPad Air
The iPad Air stands out as an excellent device that merges features with affordability. The last significant upgrade occurred in September 2020, enhancing its design to mirror that of the iPad Pro by minimizing bezels and removing the home button. This year, the iPad Air was fortunate enough to receive an upgrade, incorporating the M1 chip, which enhances its performance and makes it competitive against many laptops.
The front-facing camera has seen an upgrade to a 12 MP ultra-wide lens, and like all recent iPad models, it now includes "Center Stage" functionality. Additionally, this model is the last in the lineup to gain 5G connectivity.
The iPad Mini
Apple has made concerted efforts to enhance the iPad Mini, particularly following substantial changes made in late 2021. Although upgrades typically occur in September, it appears we may have to wait until September 2023 for the next iteration. Rumors suggest the new Mini may feature a ProMotion 120 Hz display and additional color options, with the base model likely starting at 128 GB instead of the current 64 GB.
The Basic iPad
The entry-level iPad often does not receive the same attention as its more advanced counterparts. This model is designed to be a practical device that fulfills basic tasks at a lower cost. Following the introduction of the ninth generation last year, a minor upgrade is expected this September, with speculation around the inclusion of 5G connectivity and an upgrade from the A13 to the A14 chip.
Conclusions and Personal Thoughts
Overall, I believe Apple’s iPad lineup is impressive, reflecting the company's dedication to ensuring each model meets high standards. I hope Apple can successfully implement these upgrades within the planned timeline, but as it stands, we will have to wait and see how they manage their tablet offerings this year.
