The Joy of Craftsmanship Enhances Everyday Life

One of the first things you’ll notice upon building your mechanical keyboard is an overwhelming desire to type. Few possessions inspire such reverence in me, but the thrill of typing on a keyboard I’ve personally designed is electrifying.

I find myself compelled to write more often. Regardless of whether my output is remarkable, the act of typing feels rewarding in its own right—pure magnetism.

A Thriving and Passionate Community

The custom mechanical keyboard community is a relatively recent phenomenon. While keyboards have existed for ages, the trend of personalizing them has gained significant traction.

This community has rapidly expanded, showing no signs of waning.

There are countless YouTube tech channels dedicated to reviewing the latest and greatest keyboards from well-known brands.

They cover everything from the nuances of various switch types to keycap sets and the latest modifications to achieve that coveted thocky or creamy sound, which many enthusiasts crave.

Numerous channels even provide ASMR content, where creators type on different keyboard setups. The sounds are both satisfying and inspiring, motivating viewers to embark on their own building journeys.

The possibilities are limitless. This, for me, represents the pinnacle of engaging with geek culture, and I relish every moment.

At first glance, watching a few mechanical keyboard videos may leave you perplexed due to the abundance of technical jargon that can overwhelm newcomers.

Here are some terms to help you get started:

• Switches: These are the mechanisms beneath the keycaps that generate most of the sound. Different switches offer varying levels of tactility and clickiness.
• Hot-swappable: This term refers to a keyboard's ability to have its switches replaced easily. Opting for a hot-swappable board simplifies the process of installing your preferred switches instead of being limited to stock options, though there’s nothing wrong with stock!
• Keycap profiles: Terms like XDA or ABS refer to the physical shape of the keys. Some profiles are flatter, while others are taller. The profile and thickness of the keycaps greatly influence the overall sound.

Individuality in a Shared Space

In theory, your keyboard build could be entirely unique. Combining a specific case with particular switches and keycaps results in a keyboard that is distinctly yours. The care you invest in the build enhances its sentimental value.

In practice, keyboard personalization is often dictated by supply and demand. Companies like KBD and Keychron frequently sell specific models in limited batches. Only those who are attentive to market trends (or subscribed to various newsletters) can pre-order.

Don’t fret—there are plenty of entry-level keyboards readily available. Even those more accessible to the general public can be modified extensively to create something that reflects your individuality.

Introducing My Keyboard: From Entry-Level to Pro

As someone on the brink of a new hobby, I was uncertain about how committed I wanted to be for my first build. Playing it safe with your initial board is advisable. Once you fall head over heels for custom keyboards, then go ahead and splurge.

I purchased an Anne Pro 2 for $90 on Amazon. I won’t include an affiliate link since there are many superior options available now. As Ferris Bueller famously said:

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

This is equally true for tech markets, especially keyboards, where something new seems to emerge every couple of weeks.

The Anne Pro 2 isn’t hot-swappable. I was hesitant about installing custom switches (which can be quite pricey) and didn’t want to risk damaging anything during my first build. I opted for the preinstalled Khail Box Red switches.

While I initially loved the sound in videos, I soon found them lacking compared to other switches I learned about in the community.

Choosing the Right Mechanical Keyboard

• Conduct a simple YouTube search for the “best budget mechanical keyboards” of the year to find several suitable options.
• Prioritize sound design over aesthetics. Once you identify an entry-level keyboard that interests you, search for a “sound test” to hear how it sounds. There will likely be multiple videos showcasing various keycap and switch combinations, helping you gauge how this keyboard might fit into your daily routine.
• Many enjoy the RGB lighting features that most mechanical keyboards offer. Personally, I don’t utilize this option. If you prefer a visually striking gaming setup, feel free to choose a keyboard that boasts diverse lighting profiles.

My only regret with my 60% keyboard is the lack of arrow keys. Terms like 60%, 65%, or 75% refer to the number of keys on the board. The Anne Pro 2 is compact, lacking a number pad, arrow keys, or function keys.

Unless you frequently use a number pad for calculations or hotkeys in design software, a 60% keyboard might suit you well. Depending on your keyboard usage, it’s essential to select one that aligns with your needs.

In my research, I learned that materials are crucial. The internal and external components of each keyboard can significantly affect the overall sound quality.

After much effort, I finally achieved a remarkable sound from my keyboard.

Why Modify a Keyboard? My Modifications

Even as a one-time mechanical keyboard owner (though I plan to purchase more in the future), much of its value stems from assembling it myself.

I read a book titled Shop Class As Soulcraft some time ago, which emphasizes the relationship between craftsmen—like mechanics and clockmakers—and their work. Initially, I found this notion pretentious.

However, it rings true. Throughout history, humans have created art and technology designed for both practical and aesthetic utility.

We take pride in our creations. The tools we work on embody a significant part of our humanity.

Modifying my keyboard was straightforward yet meticulous, resulting in something akin to what Dr. Frankenstein might dream of.

Here are my modifications:

• Case foam mod: This involves opening the keyboard housing and adding a thin foam layer, resulting in a deeper sound profile.
• Swapped a plastic case for a wooden one: I purchased a walnut wood case specifically for the Anne Pro 2. This change slightly altered the sound profile, leading to a shallower tone than I desired; this was my only instance of prioritizing aesthetics over sound.
• Custom keycaps: Initially, I used a generic honey keycap set from Amazon, which provided a deeper sound. I’ve since switched to clone GMK Olivias, which, while not as high-quality as the original, receive positive reviews for those not seeking perfection. I thoroughly enjoy my new keycaps.
• Lubed the switches: Many creators recommend Krytox 205g0, a lubricant for electronics that minimizes rattling. It’s particularly beneficial for switches, allowing them to glide smoothly while enhancing the thocky sound—an experience you have to hear to fully appreciate.
• Acquired a desk mat: I found that despite my modifications, the sound output still had a sharp high end that bothered me. After buying a simple black rubber desk mat, the thockiness of my keyboard improved significantly.
• Modified the spacebar: The spacebar from my keycap set was slightly oversized for the wooden casing, producing an annoying scratching noise with each press. I trimmed its edge and filled it with tape to reduce the hollow sound, aligning it more closely with the rest of the board's timbre.

I’ve recently taken the time to re-lube some switches for a more consistent sound across the board (turns out I was a bit stingy during my initial attempt) and finally found the keycaps that complete the aesthetic.

While the visual aspect is secondary for me, it still matters. Before I even began searching for a mechanical keyboard, I envisioned something that would evoke the warmth of coffee and jazz—true ink and paper.

This abstract idea has now been brought to life through my keyboard. After a year of settling for a subpar setup—having not known how to properly lube or which keycaps would best fit my desk—I have finally achieved my vision.

I aimed for a Dark Academia vibe—something that might feel at home in the depths of Hogwarts if they had access to modern tech. Or perhaps a keyboard used by a student from the Dead Poets Society, jotting down profound thoughts.

With a wooden casing and ink-black keys adorned with rose-gold legends, it perfectly fits the bill. Simple. Elegant.
