The Xbox Series X: A Subtle Powerhouse That Delivers
Written on
What an exciting era for gaming! Modern consoles are offering stunning, high-resolution gameplay experiences at competitive prices.
In this piece, I will explore some key questions regarding my experience with the Xbox Series X, providing a review that strikes a balance between brevity and depth.
Microsoft's design team has truly excelled; the XSX features a sleek, minimalist aesthetic that seamlessly integrates with your TV setup while standing out when powered on.
In summary, this console can: - Deliver visuals in 4K HDR. - Produce high-quality Dolby Atmos sound. - Support Variable Refresh Rate. - And much more.
In a market that demands superior gaming, the Xbox Series X stands out, making it a worthwhile investment for many gamers.
Is It Truly Next-Gen?
What defines a next-gen gaming console? I believe there are three essential elements:
- Visuals
- Audio
- Control
Regarding visuals: The XSX is equipped with a robust Zen 2, 8-core CPU that can run numerous games in native 4K at a smooth 60FPS with HDR output.
Loading times are impressively quick, thanks to its advanced SSD. The ample RAM enables quick resume functionality, allowing you to dive back into your games without lengthy loading screens.
Most cross-generation titles aim for 60FPS in 4K and enhance graphics with Ray Tracing and HDR, while many next-gen games offer native 4K at 60FPS with ray tracing.
In terms of audio: The console supports immersive audio technologies such as Dolby Atmos. When I played Forza Horizon 5, connecting my TV's audio to my Sony Soundbar allowed for an incredible experience:
> As I sped along the highway, the sounds of rival engines surrounded me, highlighting the magic of Dolby Atmos.
Regarding control: The XSX controller is ergonomically designed, and its wireless connectivity is reliable. While it may not have the same haptic feedback as the PS5 DualSense, it is still more comfortable to hold.
The aesthetics of the XSX controllers are a delight; they are colorful, minimal, and visually appealing, outshining other controllers.
Although the default controller is not rechargeable, you can use lithium batteries to extend its life. I managed to play for over 18 hours using the official Microsoft batteries.
So, is this console next-gen? Absolutely! It offers powerful hardware at a reasonable price, ensuring hours of high-quality gameplay.
Does the Design Demand Attention?
The XSX’s design isn’t as flashy as that of the PS5, nor does it aim to be. Instead, it blends into your living space, resembling a stylish piece of furniture.
It can easily go unnoticed on a desk, merging with the surroundings, especially against darker surfaces. When placed on my desk, guests often overlook it initially, only to spot it later, appreciating its subtle yet beautiful design.
Is the Look Too Simple?
While I appreciate the XSX's understated design, I do think it leans a bit too minimal. However, it doesn’t come across as incomplete. If I could make a wish list, it would include: - Adding green buttons on the front of the console. - Incorporating RGB lighting to give it an Xbox green glow. - Including a clear indicator for inserting Blu-ray discs. - Providing a USB-C port along with the Type-A.
The overly minimalist design presents some maintenance challenges, as it isn't easy to access the console for cleaning. Nevertheless, it does have a large exhaust vent on top that can help clear dust with an air blower. I wish it were as user-friendly to open as the PS5.
What About the User Interface?
I find the current UI of the Xbox to be somewhat outdated, reminiscent of the Windows 8 experience. The interface is crowded with large tiles that obscure the wallpaper.
This design style can create confusion. For example, locating the update section in the Microsoft Store app has proven difficult for me.
Pressing the Xbox button on the controller brings up a side menu filled with various options, each containing its own submenus, complicating navigation.
For many users, GamePass is the primary way to enjoy the console's offerings. Unfortunately, the Microsoft Store's confusing UX makes it challenging to find GamePass titles.
On a positive note, Microsoft is actively enhancing the Xbox software with monthly updates, making me hopeful for future improvements.
Is There Enough Storage for My Games?
Most next-gen titles consume less storage compared to older consoles. The XSX features a hardware decoder that decompresses large files, improving loading times while reducing game sizes.
I’ve installed over five next-gen games, which took up more than 600GB of storage, leaving me with under 300GB available for additional titles. To expand my library, I’ll need to invest in Storage Expansion cards.
Installing these expansion cards (essentially small SSDs) is easy, akin to inserting a memory card into a PS2 console. They are well-designed and user-friendly, but they come with a hefty price tag.
Currently, a 1TB Storage Expansion Card from Seagate retails for $219, while similar drives can be found for less for PCs or PS5s.
I hope for more affordable expansion options or the ability to use any M.2 SSD as additional storage for the console.
Can I Game for Hours Without Overheating?
The XSX maintains a comfortable temperature even during extended gaming sessions. The fans remain relatively quiet, ensuring a pleasant experience.
After playing Forza Horizon 5 for over three hours, the console remained cool, and the fan noise was hardly noticeable.
The efficient design of its chassis allows for sustained gaming without performance dips. I played Gears 5 for over two hours without experiencing any lags or interruptions.
What About the Controller?
As a longtime PlayStation user, transitioning to the Xbox controller was a challenge due to the different button layout.
However, the controller is one of the most comfortable I've used. Its balanced weight distribution prevents hand fatigue.
Playing online shooters with this controller is a significant improvement over competitors; the buttons are tactile, and the overall ergonomics are exceptional.
While the vibration motors aren't as advanced as those in the DualSense, they still provide enough feedback to enhance immersion in most games, though they feel somewhat standard to me.
Lastly, the aesthetics are outstanding! These controllers are not just functional but also visually striking, reminiscent of the diverse designs found in Apple Watch bands.
How’s the Audio Design in Its Interface?
The sound design of the Xbox is truly enchanting. From the subtle clicks and confirmation sounds to the startup tone, everything feels polished.
I particularly love the startup sound; it strikes a nostalgic yet modern chord, far more appealing than the one on my PS5.
As I navigate menus and input text, the audio feedback reflects the high-quality design one would expect from Microsoft, similar to their Surface product line.
The audio experience is an integral part of the Xbox ecosystem, resonating throughout the home.
Conclusion
In summary, the Xbox Series X is undeniably a next-gen gaming console. Titles like Forza Horizon 5, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and Gears 5 will leave a memorable mark on your gaming adventures.
If you’re serious about immersive gameplay, I recommend investing in: - An Xbox Wireless Headset - An Elite Wireless Controller - A 4K HDR 120Hz IPS Monitor - A Subscription to Xbox GamePass
As of this review's writing, the Xbox Series X is available for $499.99 at the Microsoft Store.
