Writing as Natural as Breathing: Embrace the Flow State

Chapter 1: The Connection Between Writing and Breathing
Have you ever considered the relationship between writing and breathing? The analogy holds profound meaning. Writing can be likened to the rhythmic act of breathing—each word you pen is akin to an exhalation, while each pause represents an inhalation, allowing new thoughts to come forth.
> "Writing is like breathing. Each written word is like exhaling and each pause is like inhaling as the next thought speedily arrives." — Lynn M. Dixon
This perspective may be new to some, but it resonates deeply, much like the practice of meditation. When I focus, it's as if I'm inhaling ideas, and when I release them, I find myself writing. This mirrors the "flow state" that many writers aim to achieve.
When it comes to achieving this, the ease of the process often hinges on your ability to concentrate. For me, maintaining focus can be a challenge. When my attention is drawn to multiple stimuli, I sometimes struggle to pull myself back to the task at hand, whether it's writing or another activity.
More often than not, I manage to redirect my attention back to my writing, but I won’t lie—it requires effort to regain that flow. Thankfully, my meditation practice has equipped me with the tools to restart when I feel lost in my thoughts.
Ironically, as I compose this piece, distractions are creeping in, and my thoughts are wandering.
Breathe.
There it is. I’m back on track.
Breathe.
This is how it unfolds at times, but persistence is key. You can achieve this.
With my cup of coffee beside me, I feel ready to tackle this task (and yes, I know that reference—"I drink coffee and I know things"). Focusing on my breath helps me stay centered.
I'm exploring how writing parallels the act of breathing, and it’s flowing well. Writing serves as an excellent outlet for articulating thoughts, whether on paper or a screen.
Do you see how this works? Do you believe you can do it? It’s perfectly fine to ask yourself this repeatedly until it becomes second nature. You can certainly find your rhythm again.
If I can navigate this, so can you. I’m practically the embodiment of distraction—believe me.
While it may take some trial and error, the process is entirely achievable. If writing holds significant value for you as it does for me, you will find a way. This is just one of many techniques to help you begin and maintain your writing journey.
