# Understanding Why Habits Fail to Stick: A Fresh Insight

Written on

Chapter 1: The Challenge of Sticking to New Habits

We’ve all been there—attempting to adopt a new habit, whether it’s committing to regular exercise, increasing water intake, or reducing monthly expenses. However, it's common to encounter setbacks along the way. Perhaps you missed a workout or made an unnecessary purchase.

While these minor setbacks are a normal part of the journey toward habit formation, what happens when they escalate into larger obstacles that lead us to abandon our goals altogether? Does this indicate failure? Does it mean that maintaining a healthy lifestyle or managing finances is beyond our capabilities?

Absolutely not! Although it may feel that way in the moment.

A New Perspective

Instead of spiraling into self-doubt with thoughts like:

  • "I’m a failure..."
  • "I’ll never manage to stick with this..."
  • "I wasn’t meant to succeed in this..."

What if it’s simply a matter of timing? Personally, I’ve tried countless times to establish various habits, only to find myself giving up along the way. I often labeled myself a failure, thinking that perhaps these habits weren’t meant for me.

Yet, as time passed, I noticed certain habits, like a writing routine, kept reappearing in my life. It wasn’t until recently that I managed to maintain this writing habit for longer than just a few days—a pursuit I’d been trying to solidify for years!

This suggests that the habits we repeatedly attempt to integrate into our lives may not have taken hold simply because we weren’t ready for that level of commitment at the time.

When we work on establishing new habits, they inevitably transform our identity. A shift in identity demands changes in our external circumstances, and if we’re not fully prepared for that transformation, the universe may simply hold back those changes.

Key Message: Rather than succumbing to self-criticism, take a moment to breathe and reassess your situation. Everything unfolds in its own divine timing, and your habits are no exception!
