Unlocking the Secret to Happiness: Three Essential Questions
Written on
Chapter 1: The Pursuit of Happiness
Dear Friends,
It’s a universal desire to seek happiness; it’s embedded in our nature and often framed within our spiritual journeys or other forms of self-exploration. Regardless of the terminology, what truly matters is the emotion that accompanies it. Feeling good is inherently rewarding.
However, there’s a risk of slipping into a routine, chasing fleeting moments of joy, often influenced by external pressures that distract us from our true selves. This struggle can lead to a sense of powerlessness, as we inadvertently relinquish parts of ourselves to societal expectations of happiness. Allow me to share three probing questions that can reignite your personal journey toward joy.

Before we delve into these questions, let’s establish a practice:
Seek a tranquil location, whether in nature or within your home, where you can engage in a different form of listening. Bring along a journal to capture your reflections. Verbally affirm your intention to be open and curious. In this mindful space, tune into your senses: sight, sound, touch, taste, smell, and especially that intuitive inner voice. Take a deep breath in and exhale fully. Keep your eyes open or closed—both approaches are valid. This is about cultivating the art of listening, not just to external sounds but also to any insights that arise in various forms. Stay receptive and observant, without rushing to interpret what you experience. Just take note.
Now, pose these questions either aloud or internally:
What is my purpose here?
Allow ample time for your answer to surface; there’s no need to box in what “here” signifies. It is uniquely yours. Your mind might lean towards conventional responses like being a good person or fulfilling familial roles. Acknowledge these thoughts, but listen for deeper insights. During my own reflection, I heard, “to open the hearts of those around you.”
How do I fulfill my purpose?
This question activates your understanding of purpose, wherever “here” may be for you. Pay close attention to what unfolds. This activation is essential, similar to nourishing water for a plant. Absorb the insights and write them down, preparing for the final question. For me, the response was, “by teaching.”
What hinders me from fulfilling my purpose?
This is your opportunity to identify any barriers that keep you from aligning with your true calling. Many thoughts may arise; your task is to approach yourself with compassion and vulnerability, allowing whatever needs to come forward. For me, it was, “forgetting who you are.”
After answering these three questions, examine the relationships between your responses. Then, take action! You may discover a happiness that feels both familiar and new, enveloped in love.
Love,
Scott
