Understanding SARS-CoV-2: The Urgent Need for Science Communication

Chapter 1: The Emergence of a New Virus
If you've just tuned in to the current discussions on social media, it's crucial to note that we are facing a new viral threat. By "new," I mean a virus that is spreading among the global human population. Presently, there is continuous transmission occurring across numerous countries, and the outbreak of this virus, identified as COVID-19 and caused by SARS-CoV-2, is essentially a pandemic.
SARS-CoV-2 is a variant of the original SARS coronavirus, which was among the first significant emerging pathogens of the 21st century. The initial strain was effectively controlled, leading many to mistakenly believe that the threat of SARS was eliminated. Sadly, the animal reservoirs for SARS coronaviruses, particularly bats, continued to exist, and interactions between humans and these animals persisted. This has led to a second spillover event.
In this case, a different strain has surfaced that seems to have exchanged the extreme pathogenicity of SARS-CoV-1 for a less severe disease presentation. COVID-19 currently has an estimated case-fatality rate below 2%, contrasting sharply with the much higher rates associated with SARS-CoV-1.
As of now, over 80,000 individuals worldwide have contracted this illness, with approximately 3,000 fatalities reported. While precise figures are accessible, I will refrain from sharing them as they are constantly changing. One certainty in the early phases of a new disease is the prevalence of misinformation; anything published will likely be outdated by the time it reaches the public. The emergence of a new pathogen mirrors a birthing process—it's filled with risks, complications, and unpredictability.
Section 1.1: Global Concerns and Misinformation
A significant number of people globally are understandably anxious about this virus. Consequently, widespread fear and misinformation abound, and it is regrettable that the responses from public officials have often been unclear. This has placed the responsibility on scientists to enlighten the public about the disease's nature. I intend to contribute my insights to this effort. This endeavor will be collaborative, and I plan to create several articles addressing key queries regarding SARS-CoV-2 and the COVID-19 disease it triggers. I anticipate engaging feedback from colleagues and interested members of the public as we collectively seek to comprehend this disease and shed light on the uncertainty.
