Title: Understanding the Reasons Behind People's Choices

Chapter 1: The Importance of Understanding Motivations
One significant insight I've gained as a Yoga instructor is that everyone has a rationale behind their choices. While I might not always agree with their reasoning, comprehending it can enable me to assist them more effectively.
For instance, during a recent class, I clearly and kindly instructed my students to approach the next pose with caution. I emphasized that they shouldn't push beyond their comfort zones and should ease off if they felt any discomfort.
However, I noticed a middle-aged woman in the front row straining as she attempted the pose. She was even holding her breath, clearly forcing her body into a position that seemed uncomfortable for her.
In my earlier teaching days, I might have taken her struggle personally, interpreting it as a lack of respect for my teaching style. Yet, people rarely make choices based on your actions; they are often influenced by their past experiences.
When I gently asked her why she was attempting the pose in that manner, she revealed that her previous three instructors had instilled in her the belief that this was the correct approach. It had nothing to do with my instructions.
This led me to introduce her to the concept of Ahimsa — the principle of non-harm to oneself. I firmly believe that gradually and carefully easing into poses yields far better results.
This situation illustrates that she wasn’t intentionally being difficult; she had valid reasons for her actions. It was essential for me to recognize her reasoning and provide her with a more constructive perspective.
This lesson from my Yoga class resonates across various aspects of life. When someone holds an opinion or belief that contradicts yours, there is a reason behind it. Take the time to listen and discover their perspective.
By openly engaging without judgment, you convey that you are not an adversary. This approach benefits you as well; the exchange can lead to valuable insights, and you might even find yourself adopting a new perspective!
Key Message: Individuals have motivations for their decisions, often unrelated to you. Seek to understand these motivations.
