Reflecting on 2021: A Year of Triumphs and Trials
Written on
This year has been a rollercoaster of emotions, filled with both accomplishments and setbacks.
As I penned down my aspirations in my journal last year, I found myself in a state of despair, feeling isolated despite being surrounded by family. This low point in my life prompted me to establish concrete goals rather than mere resolutions. I even documented my experience in an article.
I’m happy to report that there have been numerous moments over the past months when I’ve thought, “I couldn't have imagined this a year ago.” Dedicating myself to my goals has had a profound impact on various facets of my life. While I set some lofty targets and only managed to achieve around 70% of them, I certainly raised the bar for myself.
Friends and colleagues often compliment my ability to juggle work and hobbies seamlessly, but I still have a long way to go toward perfection.
Accomplished Goals and Valuable Lessons
I crafted an ambitious list of goals that I wished I could accomplish with ease. Some may have seemed overly ambitious, while others might have appeared foolish.
#### Growing My Tech Instagram Following
As a software developer, I view Instagram as an excellent platform for brand growth. I created a dedicated developer page to share my coding journey and book recommendations.
By the year's end, I surpassed 1000 followers—without inviting friends or family. Every follower discovered my page through Instagram’s algorithms. Many are students whom I assist with their coding challenges. Thus, I achieved this goal.
#### Earning $1000 on Medium
This milestone was unexpected. I had never thought of monetizing my passion for writing, which I often took for granted. However, after reading the works of talented writers like Sean Kernan and Tim Denning, I recognized the long journey ahead of me.
Despite my modest following, I received writing opportunities from various companies. Writing on Medium has significantly changed my life, allowing me to earn far more than I ever anticipated. Hence, this goal was a success.
#### Achieving Six-Pack Abs
At the start of 2021, I was determined to attain a fit physique with six-pack abs, albeit temporarily. While I love food, I wanted to challenge myself to reach my peak for just one day.
I committed to exercising for four months but eventually fell short due to work and countless excuses. I even invested in gym equipment but failed to stay consistent. Thus, I could not achieve this.
#### Obtaining Cloud Certification
My passion for technology has been lifelong, which motivated me to become a software developer. However, I lacked formal certification in the field.
After six months of preparation, I successfully obtained my Google Cloud certification within the first month of the year. I even documented my journey to help others. Thus, this goal was a success.
#### Building a Following on Medium
At the start of the year, I had fewer than 100 followers on Medium. Writing has always been my passion, and I understood that gaining readers required effort. I formed friendships with fellow writers who provided support and constructive feedback. Achieving 1000 followers on Medium is a significant highlight for me. Thus, this goal has been a success.
#### Launching New Businesses
In retrospect, I made some costly mistakes, particularly in trusting the wrong people. I attempted to start two businesses but faced significant failures due to my partners. Consequently, I lacked the motivation to pursue my third business idea. This goal was an absolute failure.
#### Reading at Least Six Books
My love for reading dwindled over the years, overshadowed by the allure of movies and streaming platforms. However, after subscribing to Medium in 2020, my passion for reading was reignited.
In 2021, I aimed to read at least six books, managing to read nine. This accomplishment has reignited my passion for literature, and I now share my thoughts on my Goodreads account. I’ve set even higher reading goals for 2022. This has been a massive success.
#### Other Personal Goals
I achieved most of my other personal goals, with those I didn’t reach being tantalizingly close. I’ve never felt this content with my progress. A year ago, I couldn't have imagined where I am today. This was my first year dedicated to pursuing my goals.
A Year Marked by Chaos and Heartbreak
Despite the satisfaction gained from achieving my goals, 2021 was also a tumultuous year.
#### Chaos and Fear
The pandemic claimed many lives this year, including some of my acquaintances. The severity of the situation led to mass burials in my country, with hospitals overwhelmed and resources scarce.
My mother contracted the virus during the second wave. Despite her precautions, she was infected. With our family unvaccinated, her oxygen levels plummeted dangerously low. I chose to care for her at home, arranging for necessary medical supplies and maintaining contact with a doctor. I took a 21-day leave from work to nurse her back to health, while also keeping my father at a distance due to his diabetes. Thankfully, she recovered.
After some time, my father faced surgery twice due to complications related to his diabetes, though both procedures were ultimately successful.
#### Heartbreak
The love of my life married someone else, leaving me heartbroken. I poured my emotions into writing, creating a series of heartfelt articles.
Enough said.
Helping Others in Their Careers
One of my greatest achievements this year was assisting students and professionals in pursuing careers in coding and writing. I referred many students to my organization during hiring phases and addressed numerous queries related to software development.
I successfully guided three individuals to transition into full-time writing and coding careers. While I don’t consider myself an exceptional writer or programmer, I provided them with direction and resources. One of them is now earning more through freelance writing than many on Medium.
Building Connections on Medium
I've heard that the writing profession can be ruthless, but my experiences on this platform have been quite the opposite. Writers here genuinely support one another. I received valuable feedback from seasoned writers like Sean Kernan, and I strive to return the favor whenever I can.
I've formed friendships with several talented writers, some of whom I've interacted with through other channels. I must acknowledge their influence on my writing journey: Indubala Kachhawa, Kristina God, Dr. Preeti Singh, Josephine Crispin, Rishabh Sharma, Ruchi Thalwal, Athena Milios, Synthia Stark, Dr. Mehmet Yildiz, Luay Rahil, Neeramitra Reddy, Colleen Millsteed, Dr. Derek Austin, Jennifer Pitts, Riaz Laskar, Srini, Olivia Anderson, Jessey Anthony, Connie Song, Krishna V Chaudhary, and Gayle Kurtzer-Meyers. Your work is inspiring. Thank you for your contributions.
Final Thoughts
I am currently setting goals for the upcoming year, aiming for ambitious and perhaps foolish targets, just as I did last year. Pursuing these goals will help me realize my true potential.
2021 has been incredibly eventful, filled with both triumphs and failures. I’ve experienced the full spectrum of emotions.
As I look ahead, I hope that 2022 brings excitement and success for everyone. I wish for all to reach their aspirations and anticipate traveling once normalcy returns. May you all achieve your goals in the new year.
Wishing you a joyful 2022!
