If you listen to podcasts, you've likely encountered numerous episodes discussing the impending AI apocalypse. Hosts like Ezra Klein and Sam Harris have extensively examined this issue, alongside others such as Jordan Peterson and Joe Rogan. The narrative remains consistent: advancements in AI are portrayed as a threat, potentially disrupting our culture, displacing jobs, or even posing an existential risk to humanity.

The conversation has intensified since the introduction of OpenAI's ChatGPT 3.5 and 4. Notably, a former Google expert recently left the company, issuing warnings about the power of current AI technologies. Another ex-Google executive suggested that AI could replace human connections, raising questions about our need for interpersonal relationships when technology could fulfill those roles.

However, I remain skeptical of these alarmist claims. I believe the perceived risks are often overstated, particularly by industry insiders who may overestimate their creations' capabilities. While the technology is indeed fascinating, it is also fundamentally limited, and many of the fears articulated seem detached from reality.

Regular readers will know I approach such claims with caution, often requiring substantial evidence before accepting them. Among my various skeptical viewpoints—including doubts about cryptocurrencies and fads like Web 3.0—the fear surrounding AI ranks high.

Historically, fears about technology disrupting art forms are not new. For instance, in the early 1900s, musicians expressed deep concerns about how technology would undermine traditional music. On a hot Fourth of July in 1900, John Philip Sousa, a prominent figure in American music, voiced his anxieties in an article titled "The Menace of Mechanical Music." He warned that inventions like record players would threaten the livelihood of musicians, asserting that automatic devices would replace the artistry of human performers.

Sousa believed that the ease of accessing music through machines would diminish the need for musicians and educators, resulting in a cultural decline. Ironically, the very technology he feared ended up promoting classical music, leading to a resurgence in its popularity. Reports from 2019 indicated a significant increase in subscribers to classical music playlists, contradicting Sousa's predictions.

Sousa's misjudgment is not an isolated incident; history is replete with instances of misguided technological forecasts. This tendency to misjudge human behavior is a recurring theme in technological predictions.

Additionally, the fear that generative AI could spread misinformation has been overstated. While it's valid to be concerned about the potential misuse of AI, the reality is that misinformation has always existed, and humans have historically been susceptible to believing unfounded claims. The emergence of generative AI doesn’t fundamentally change this dynamic; it merely amplifies an existing issue.
