Maximizing Productivity: Essential Strategies for Side Hustlers
Written on
Chapter 1: The Importance of Direction in Side Hustling
Every individual pursuing a side hustle has their own strategy to enhance productivity and increase earnings. I propose a framework consisting of four quadrants that you can adopt and implement.
As side hustlers, it's vital to maintain a long-term perspective. Personally, I aim to ensure that my evening work (from 6 to 9 PM) is purpose-driven. This entails concentrating on my strengths while maximizing income.
"Lack of direction, not lack of time, is the problem. We all have twenty-four hour days."
- Zig Ziglar
While browsing through my LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube channel, and other platforms where I have shared my work over the past year, I felt a sense of fulfillment regarding my side-hustling endeavors during those hours. However, this exploration also led to a barrage of thoughts, culminating in a pivotal question:
"How can I direct my 6–9 PM side hustles with greater clarity?"
Author's Note: It's crucial to narrow our focus to a select few impactful items, as this is just as essential as exploring various platforms to disseminate our work. My opinion is to embrace both approaches.
Section 1.1: Envisioning the Future
Taking time to visualize what lies ahead is a cornerstone of driving our current actions. We need a target that aligns our focus. Without it, we risk wasting our efforts on aimless pursuits.
"When people have something to look forward to, they are more motivated, enthusiastic, and positive in their work and personal lives."
- Grant Cardone
The concept of the future acts as a powerful force drawing us toward it. It should be so compelling that we feel compelled to strive for it.
To put this into practice, I took a piece of paper and drew a vertical line down the center. I labeled the left side "Today" and the right side "Tomorrow." I paused to reflect, allowing inspiration to flow.
Section 1.2: Reflecting on Achievements and Goals
Suddenly, a quote from Dan Priestly's "Oversubscribed" resonated with me:
"Like it or not, we are our own media business. Like it or not, we are our own sales business. Like it or not, we are our own marketing business. Like it or not, we are our own technology business."
This realization hit home. As a side hustler, I must actively engage in these four domains. I then transformed my paper into four quadrants, maintaining the "Today" and "Tomorrow" headers while adding "Attend to NOW" and "Priority NEXT" as row titles.
The process of categorizing my side-hustling activities became systematic.
Author's Note: Each person will have their unique method for maintaining focus in their side hustles. My advice is to regularly assess your goals and direction—monthly and quarterly reviews are particularly helpful in regaining focus when distractions arise.
Chapter 2: Structuring Activities for Success
Video Description: In this video, we explore a simple side hustle strategy that could work for you, offering insights into maximizing your productivity and income.
When I refer to "the future," I mean both time and energy management. If you undertake this exercise to enhance your productivity, consider what you include and exclude.
Using my four quadrants as an example:
- Top Left Quadrant (Today + Attend to NOW): Activities such as lead generation, closing deals, and serving existing clients.
- Bottom Left Quadrant (Today + Prioritize NEXT): Exploring new content channels, genres, and opportunities for interviews or collaborations.
- Top Right Quadrant (Tomorrow + Attend to NOW): Finalizing plans or discarding those that are no longer relevant.
- Bottom Right Quadrant (Tomorrow + Prioritize NEXT): Automating tasks and scouting for team expansion opportunities.
There’s no right or wrong approach here; your understanding of time and energy management will differ from mine. The key is aligning your focus with your goals to enhance productivity during your 6–9 sessions.
Author's Note: Be decisive during this exercise—protect your time and energy fiercely. Identify the activities that are most important for the month or quarter. For me, that includes copywriting, managing a startup, and improving my writing skills.
Strikethrough any activities that drain your time. For instance, I decided to forgo my podcast and personal branding coaching over Zoom, as they were consuming too much of my energy.
You must commit to becoming more productive, as this directly correlates to increased income from your side hustle.
Author's Note: I refrained from assigning specific time allocations to each quadrant, as individual focus varies greatly. You will need to identify the time distribution that works for you.
Summary
The pursuit of productivity is universal. Time and energy are invaluable assets that cannot be reclaimed once lost. Therefore, we must remain focused on our actions and aspirations. Strategic planning for both today and the future is essential for success in side hustling.
Think like an archer: without a clear target, your arrows will not hit the mark.
Wishing you all the best in your endeavors!
