Many individuals don't begin exploring emotional intelligence (EQ) until later in life, as it is rarely emphasized in educational settings. Personally, I was introduced to the concept at the age of 35. However, developing emotional intelligence is crucial for achieving career success. Let’s delve into its significance and explore straightforward methods to enhance your EQ.

What is Emotional Intelligence?

Emotional intelligence refers to your ability to perceive, comprehend, and manage your emotions as well as those of others. It entails being aware of your feelings, controlling impulsive responses, demonstrating empathy, communicating effectively, and leveraging emotions positively to navigate challenges and fortify relationships.

Psychologists assert that these skills enable you to make wiser decisions, maintain composure in stressful situations, and enhance interpersonal connections—all vital elements for success in life. Emotional intelligence is a skill set that can and should be cultivated.

In their 2009 work, Emotional Intelligence 2.0, authors Travis Bradberry and Jean Greaves noted:

> "Of all the people we’ve studied at work, we have found that 90 percent of high performers are also high in EQ. Conversely, only 20 percent of low performers exhibit high EQ." pg. 21

They adeptly handle tough situations, foster enduring relationships, and make informed decisions by recognizing how emotions influence daily life. As Dr. Goleman noted, individuals with emotional intelligence are bound to succeed.

How Can I Start Improving My Emotional Intelligence?

Having established the importance of emotional intelligence, let’s explore actionable steps you can take to start enhancing your EQ today.

  1. Practice self-awareness: The foundation of emotional intelligence is recognizing your emotions. Start monitoring how you feel in various situations.

    Are you angry? Sad? Stressed? Excited?
