The Advantages of Owning a Kindle for Lifelong Learning

Written on

Why should you consider getting a Kindle to enhance your journey as a lifelong learner? There are two simple paths to improving our world: either ensuring every household has a cat or making sure everyone owns a Kindle. Both options are straightforward.

Books have always represented a connection between imagination and tranquility for me. In my daily routine, they have inspired me to write, reflect, and engage in meaningful conversations with others. This affinity for books is shared by many, and my appreciation for aesthetically pleasing covers only deepens my love for them.

Let me clarify: I do not read consistently, but due to my profession and interests, I find myself needing to read a certain amount each day. This necessity drives me to seek out insightful bloggers, engaging columnists, and imaginative authors whose narratives transport me to different realms. Thus, my Kindle, the subject of this discussion, is the perfect tool for fulfilling this desire.

My bond with my Kindle began in 2014, shortly after relocating to the United States. During my lengthy two-hour commutes by bus, it was nearly impossible to read a physical book without risking injury. Scrolling aimlessly through Instagram only added to my restlessness until I brought my Kindle along for the ride. Once I purchased it, I would compile a list of articles and columns the night before and dive into them as soon as I boarded the bus.

I grew so fond of my Kindle that I would steer conversations with friends toward literature. As discussions unfolded, I would lavish praise on my Kindle for its practicality. I never received any compensation from Amazon for my endorsements; my affection was genuine and reserved for only a few: my family, the Argentina football team, and my Kindle.

One afternoon, as we sipped tea with friends, the discussion shifted to the significance of reading while using public transportation. Just then, Mr. Said joined our table. I recalled a cartoon by Umut Sarikaya that inspired me, and I exclaimed to him, “Come, brother, we're singing the praises of the Kindle!

By the way, Umut Sarikaya is an exceptionally talented Turkish cartoonist, arguably more skilled than Christopher Niemann, who creates covers for the New Yorker. Yet, 99.9% of people remain unaware of him, which is a loss not just for him but for humanity as a whole.

It has become second nature for me to extol the virtues of my Kindle at every opportunity, as I firmly believe it is one of the finest devices ever made. If someone were to ask me whether I'd prefer to lose my Kindle or my iPhone, I might hesitate before saying my iPhone. While it may seem like hyperbole to some, my affection for the Kindle runs deep, and I only wish I could read as much as I love it.

Years have passed, and my Kindle remains my steadfast companion. Previously, I sought shirts with front pockets for my glasses; now, I check if my Kindle will fit in any shirt or pants pocket before making a purchase.

I realize the introduction to this article has been lengthy, but the content ahead will be substantial. Buckle up, everyone. Cabin crew, please prepare for takeoff!

Many purchases we make can leave us feeling dissatisfied. In February 2014, I completed my first book on my Kindle within a week. I placed the device before me and declared, “The money I spent on you was well worth it.” My Kindle allowed me to read whenever I desired, and it fulfilled that promise.

When people find joy, they often want to share it with those around them. Personally, I like to treat everyone to tea when I'm particularly happy. Yet, observing people engrossed in TikTok videos on buses, metros, parks, or gardens makes me wish for a fortune to provide everyone with a Kindle.

Why Do Some People Criticize the Kindle?

There are two straightforward reasons for this. First, critics may not have owned a Kindle themselves, and second, those who criticize it often aren’t avid readers.

People typically favor what they know. For instance, I find TikTok baffling and unappealing; it seems pointless to me. It’s natural for those who have never held a Kindle to express negativity toward it. In our current era, the predominant emotion among people appears to be disdain. They often dislike those who think, dress, or behave differently. Hence, why would they appreciate the Kindle if they have never tried it?

Statistics about reading habits are readily available. For example, individuals aged 15 to 44 in the U.S. spend ten minutes or less reading daily, which is quite revealing.

  • Book enthusiasts criticize the Kindle because it doesn’t evoke the same feelings as reading a physical book. I can’t fault traditionalists for this, as I too love the scent of books and always purchase a hard copy of every book I finish on my Kindle. Having books on shelves adds aesthetic value and can ignite an interest in reading among children. You might find this article on the topic insightful.
  • An absurd critique of the Kindle is that its touchscreen is slower than that of an iPad. Sure, it may take half a second to turn a page, but for someone who doesn’t read at least ten minutes daily, that half-second can feel significant. This criticism often makes me cringe.
  • Some individuals compare the Kindle to an iPad and choose the latter. While the iPad may be more versatile, it serves a different function than the Kindle, which is designed specifically for reading. The Kindle excels in making reading both easier and more enjoyable.
  • Regardless of how lightweight iPads are, they can become cumbersome, causing discomfort or eye strain during extended reading sessions. Additionally, if both hands are occupied, you can’t turn the page on an iPad. The Kindle, on the other hand, requires just a tap—so much so that you could even use your nose if your hands are full. Those opting for an iPad to read should consider a 55-inch LED TV to mirror their books. Seems simpler, right?
  • That being said, the only legitimate drawback I have encountered regarding the Kindle comes from research suggesting that reading on a Kindle may result in retaining fewer details compared to reading a physical book. You can find the research details here.

Why Should Someone Read with a Kindle?

If you're not a bad person, much like you use an iron to smooth clothes and a saw to cut wood, the Kindle should be used solely for reading. It serves no other purpose—no money transfers or cat videos here. When reading with a Kindle, you won’t be distracted by external noise or advertisements.

Doesn’t the Kindle appear to be a perfect antidote to the lack of concentration many face today because of this feature?

Moreover, we shouldn’t confine reading to just books. It’s essential to recognize that anyone can express themselves verbally and anyone with internet access can write. Some online writers create beautiful and thought-provoking articles, and I enjoy reading those bloggers and columnists. However, without a Kindle, reading on public transport can strain your eyesight. If the goal is reading, anything besides using a Kindle becomes mere conjecture.

What are the Benefits of Kindle?

Rest assured, I won’t present nonsensical arguments such as carrying an entire library with you. Why would anyone want to lug around thousands of books? The internet is ubiquitous, allowing you to purchase and download books conveniently from your phone. Instead, here are more rational and tangible benefits of the Kindle:

  • The Kindle’s design stands out for its focus on uninterrupted reading. While other devices bombard users with ads and notifications, the Kindle allows for a serene reading experience.
  • The Kindle is straightforward and environmentally friendly. Using it helps reduce paper waste and the need for deforestation, a critical step in combating global warming.
  • It’s an excellent tool for language learners. Mastery of a language involves practice, and reading is an integral part of that. If you have a language dictionary downloaded, you can learn new vocabulary with a simple tap, regardless of internet access.
  • The Kindle is gentle on your eyes. It employs e-ink technology designed to prevent eye strain, providing the sensation of reading a printed book.
  • E-ink technology is significant. Just as the first iPhone marked a new era, e-ink technology has propelled us forward. When I used to play with my PlayStation Portable on the bus, I often wondered when technology would yield screens that wouldn’t be affected by sunlight. Only Amazon answered that call with the Kindle, which you can read in any lighting condition.
  • If you’re reading in bed at night, your partner might ask you to turn off the light. The Kindle’s design minimizes light spill, ensuring that only the reader is illuminated. For instance, when reading on a bus at night, the light won't disturb the passengers nearby.
  • The Kindle features easy note-taking and highlighting. Any underlined text is stored in a section called ‘My Clippings,’ allowing you to revisit insights from your reading at any time.
  • The Kindle offers a bookmarking function, enabling you to read multiple books simultaneously while always resuming from where you left off. If you ever replace your Kindle, transferring your bookmarks is effortless.
  • Occasionally, you may forget your Kindle. However, you can download the Kindle app on your phone, log into your account, and continue reading. Many users find this feature invaluable.
  • The Kindle can estimate how long it will take you to finish a specific section based on your reading speed. While it may not be entirely accurate initially, it quickly adjusts to provide realistic time frames, helping you manage your time better.

Even if some features seem trivial to some, they can significantly enhance the reading experience. When using the Kindle, others cannot see what book you’re reading. In some places, books are banned, and being able to read without fear of censorship is invaluable. Perhaps the Kindle can help preserve your freedom.

Tips That Make the Kindle Even Better

Every Kindle model offers a version with its own internet connection. If you invest a little more for this version, you can access the internet anywhere in the world. Yes, you read that correctly. Even though this internet may not support social media, it works perfectly for research, such as checking definitions or looking up information on Wikipedia. You can also access resources from your books without requiring a Wi-Fi connection.

With a few subscriptions, you can access some of the world's best magazines at little to no cost. For instance, subscribing to the New York Times through your Amazon account often comes with a free week-long trial, allowing you to enjoy this publication on your Kindle.

You can also connect with others through your Kindle. Readers often highlight passages that resonate with them and share those insights. This collaborative aspect can deepen your understanding of the material.

Some Problems That are Experienced With the Kindle and Their Solutions

Even the most remarkable device, the Kindle, can have its shortcomings. You might find yourself saying, “Come on, even the best have their flaws!” Fortunately, many of these issues can be resolved easily.

PDF documents can be cumbersome to read on the Kindle. The formatting isn’t always optimal, which can be frustrating. However, you can convert PDFs into Word files on your computer and then upload them to your Kindle. This quick fix should not deter anyone from enjoying the Kindle.

The Kindle has historically not supported EPUB files. Thankfully, this issue has been resolved as of late 2022. However, if you still encounter this problem, you can easily convert EPUB files to MOBI format using Calibre in just a few minutes.

After acquiring your Kindle, it’s wise to invest in a protective case. While it’s not mandatory, protecting your device ensures its longevity. I use a case for my Kindle Oasis and appreciate the added security. The Kindle screen is delicate; I once placed mine on an airplane seat, and a coin scratched it. That was a painful sight.

How Can You Add Content On a Kindle?

Transferring content to your Kindle is straightforward, whether using a cable or going wireless. Personally, I prefer not to use cables.

There are multiple methods to send content to a Kindle, depending on the type of content. For instance, the easiest way to send a book is through the “Send to Kindle” app from Amazon. This application allows you to wirelessly send documents or books by simply dragging and dropping them into a compatible format.

When you visit the Amazon website, you’ll find various options. Two versions of the “Send to Kindle” app are available: a web browser add-on and a desktop application.

The web browser add-on for Chrome is particularly useful. It allows you to scan the text on any webpage and send it directly to your Kindle with a click. For example, if you come across an article you want to read later, simply use the extension to send it to your Kindle.

The desktop application works similarly. You set it up like any office software, connect your Amazon Kindle email, and drag the documents or books you wish to read into the program. Afterward, just hit the upload button, and it will be sent to your Kindle.

How Can I Manually Update My Kindle?

If you have difficulty updating your Kindle via the settings, follow these steps:

First, find your Kindle version by navigating to settings > device options > device info > firmware info. Then, visit the Amazon page to download the latest update for your Kindle. If your device is outdated, download the files and connect your Kindle to your computer via cable to transfer them. Go back to the settings and select “update your Kindle” to proceed.

What Kindle Version Should I Get?

Amazon offers various Kindle models ranging from $89 to $289. The Kindle Paperwhite is a popular choice at $139, while the latest model is the Kindle Oasis at $289.

I initially owned a Kindle Paperwhite, which served me well for five years. I eventually gifted it to my brother. Upon returning from a trip, I found a Kindle Oasis on Facebook for just $50, and I quickly purchased it.

What accounts for the $150 difference between the Paperwhite and the Oasis? Primarily design and usability; in my view, it doesn’t justify such a price gap. The Kindle Paperwhite is an excellent choice, and if you're on a budget, you won't regret opting for it.

Since 2013, I’ve utilized my Kindle extensively, reading numerous books and articles across various environments and climates, and my device remains as reliable as ever. In summary, the Kindle is an ideal companion for avid readers, always within arm’s reach. While traditional book reading offers a unique experience, reading e-books is equally enjoyable. Most importantly, the Kindle has significantly increased my reading frequency. Thank you, Kindle, and a shout-out to Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning for this fantastic invention!
