# Insightful Lessons from a Simple Workout on Business Growth

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding the Intensity Curve

A straightforward workout routine taught me invaluable lessons about business expansion. Those who fail to grasp the Intensity Curve often find themselves overwhelmed within just three years.

My artistic skills might not be top-notch, but this drawing illustrates an important principle I learned years ago. As our session was about to kick off, our coach sketched this concept on the whiteboard. He outlined the day's workout and cautioned us about the misleading nature of simplicity.

For the day, we had a single exercise: burpees (drop down, perform a push-up, leap back up). The plan was to increase our burpee count each minute.

Here's how it went: - First minute: 1 burpee - Second minute: 2 burpees - Third minute: 3 burpees - And so forth… until we could no longer complete the round.

It seemed straightforward enough.

As we commenced, the timer started, and we sprang into action, completing our first burpee. For the remaining 58 seconds, we merely waited for the next minute. The second minute came, and we managed the 2 burpees, followed by another 57 seconds of waiting. Some participants appeared entertained, as it didn't seem particularly challenging.

The same pattern continued into the third minute.

However, things began to shift around the fifth minute. Participants started to slow down, with some opting to break the burpees into sets. By the seventh round, many of us had dropped out. What was happening?

The intensity escalated unexpectedly. Each round felt exponentially tougher than the last. By the tenth round, most had given up, leaving only the firefighters and Navy SEALs to battle it out for a few more rounds, with the SEAL ultimately emerging victorious (those guys are incredible).

How did this seemingly simple workout overwhelm us so quickly?

The Intensity Curve

There's a purpose behind sharing this story. Everything in life is interconnected. The same principle applies when launching a business.

Bill Gates famously remarked that people often overestimate what they can achieve in a single year while underestimating what can be accomplished in a decade. In the beginning, progress may appear slow and insignificant. A year might pass, leaving you feeling frustrated by the lack of visible advancement.

But keep pushing forward. Those seemingly minor efforts are not as trivial as they seem. One day, out of the blue — BAM!

But it's not truly unexpected; it has been building up for quite some time. You’re not merely making progress; you’re generating momentum.

Do you see why I’m sharing this with you?

Keep building!
