The Illusion of Online Courses: Why They're Not Worth Your Time

Written on

The Rise of Influencers and Online Courses

In today’s digital landscape, new avenues for connection and content consumption have emerged, along with a fresh wave of marketing strategies. Enter the Influencer—be it a YouTuber, Instagram star, or a Medium author. When you ask Gen Z about their career aspirations, a common response is:

"I aspire to be a YouTuber or an Influencer."

Who wouldn't want that lifestyle? Influencers appear to lead enviable lives, showcasing their experiences daily. Many view online fame as a golden opportunity, believing:

"If I gather enough followers, my life will be perfect!"

Few people desire the traditional 9-to-5 grind, and who can blame them? The allure of becoming a Social Media Personality is enticing. However, the hidden challenges—like understanding algorithms, managing public scrutiny, and seizing early opportunities—are rarely discussed.

The Exhaustion of Conventional Work

Many individuals, especially in America, are weary of the daily grind. I relate to this sentiment—I’ve experienced it myself. Unfortunately, for most, this is the stark reality. The truth is, not everyone can become a social media influencer; if they could, there wouldn’t be an audience left to engage with.

Influencers have proliferated across various online sectors. Whatever your interest, it's likely there's someone capitalizing on it. This saturation has created an almost dystopian atmosphere where everything feels like a scam. Can we trust that these influencers genuinely deliver on their promises?

Consider the IT sector. Numerous so-called IT influencers offer guidance on careers and skills. I've encountered some who struggle with technology yet excel at video production and self-promotion. Their solution? Selling courses.

The Course Selling Phenomenon

This brings me to the heart of the matter: the incessant advertisements for courses. Everywhere I turn, I see "Enroll in My Course!" messages promising to transform you into a better Medium writer, a successful YouTuber, an expert dropshipper, or even a Crypto millionaire. It’s all a carefully curated image.

Influencers have transitioned from selling content to promoting success. The catch? Success is not guaranteed. Many individuals prefer to believe they can simply pay a fixed amount for a promised outcome.

I've observed YouTubers generate substantial income from these courses. It's a lucrative venture, and many are willing to invest. We all know someone who has fallen prey to this trend. A mix of economic and psychological desperation, along with skepticism toward traditional institutions, has birthed a generation of snake oil salespeople hawking their "secrets" to the masses.

Stop Investing in These Courses!

It's time to reconsider. Shelling out money for these courses may not be beneficial; you’re merely enriching someone with a six-figure income. These courses often lack the value they claim to provide. That inconsequential certificate you receive at the end holds no weight in the eyes of employers and won’t create a significant change in your life.

Person contemplating course investments

If you've purchased a course, I’m not here to criticize you. My aim is to raise awareness about the digital snake oil marketed to you at every scroll. The attention economy is immensely profitable, and we are all part of this intricate system.

I strive to disrupt this cycle.

Better alternatives exist for launching a business, building a brand, or improving your financial standing. Handing money to an internet persona won’t resolve your issues. We live in an era where information is freely accessible, yet many still feel it’s locked away from them.
