Hitchhiker Astronauts: Concerns About Butch and Suni's Situation

Chapter 1: The Situation of Butch and Suni

Many individuals are anxious regarding the status of Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Does this imply that they cannot return in the event of an emergency? Let's delve into the details!

As is widely known, Butch and Suni are set to remain on the ISS for a duration of eight months instead of the initially planned eight days. Their transport vessel returned to Earth without them, raising concerns about their prolonged stay. Is it possible they will be stuck up there for nearly a year? Let's investigate further!

Butch and Suni made their journey to the ISS aboard the Boeing Starliner 3.2 Calypso capsule. The launch was deemed successful as they arrived at the space station on June 5, 2024. However, their mission encountered challenges. A malfunction in the ISS's urine recycling pump necessitated that the astronauts bring a spare part with them.

After their arrival, issues arose with the thrusters on the capsule, prompting NASA to send the capsule back to Earth alone while leaving the astronauts behind. Concurrently, it was revealed that they would be returning on the SpaceX Crew-9 mission, scheduled for launch on September 24, 2024, with a docking planned for the following day (UTC time) and a return home in March 2025.

Crew-9 is tasked with bringing Butch and Suni back to Earth. However, what occurs in the interim between the Starliner's return and Crew-9's arrival on September 25? Are the astronauts truly stranded on the ISS during this period? To address this, we need to understand the structure of the space station.

To dock with a space station, there must be available docking ports. The ISS has multiple ports, though currently, it features three Russian ports and two US ports. The US ports are situated in the Harmony module: Harmony Forward (the forward-facing port) and Harmony Zenith (the space-facing port).

The Starliner initially docked at Harmony Forward, which is currently vacant. Any upcoming capsule, like Crew-9, will likely dock at this same port. However, considering US ports, there's another available port—Harmony Zenith—which is not currently vacant as the Crew-8 capsule occupies it.

Crew-8 began its mission on March 4, 2024, and reached the ISS the following day with crew members Alexander, Michael, Matthew, and Jeanette on board. They docked at Harmony Forward initially but later moved to Harmony Zenith, where the capsule will remain until its return on October 1, 2024.

Let's outline the timeline:

  • Now: Crew-8 docked
  • September 25: Crew-9 docks
  • October 1: Crew-8 returns
  • March 2025: Crew-9 with Butch and Suni returns

This means that at any point, Butch and Suni can rest easy knowing there’s always a capsule ready for an emergency return from the ISS. They are not entirely stranded in space.

The end of September will see the space station bustling with activity. Hopefully, Butch and Suni's unexpectedly extended stay between the Earth and Sun will become a memorable experience. While hitchhiking back to Earth, they should keep in mind that the driver has control over the open windows!
