Many individuals find themselves struggling with consistency, often feeling overwhelmed by the idea of taking large actions. Self-improvement expert Tony Robbins frequently emphasizes the importance of massive action; however, this approach isn't universally effective.
For instance, if your goal is to begin exercising but you can only manage two minutes of running without becoming breathless, launching into an intense workout may not be the best strategy. Instead, consider setting a modest goal of running for just two minutes each day for the next week. Gradually increase your time to three minutes, then four, and continue until you can comfortably run for ten minutes. By starting with small tasks, you'll build confidence and be prepared to tackle larger challenges.
Quick Story:
When my son was four years old, I attended a meeting with his teacher, which left me in tears as she suggested he might have special needs. Initially resistant to her assessment, I returned home determined to create a plan. At that time, he struggled with basic concepts, so I printed car logos from the internet, laminated them, and organized them in a folder alongside the corresponding car names.
Keep in mind, my son couldn't even read simple two-letter words back then. I set a goal for him to learn one car symbol each day, matching it with its name. On the first day, I assisted him in sounding out the car's name, and by the evening, he successfully matched it with the symbol.
The following day, we repeated the process with a different logo, and for the next two weeks, he consistently matched one car name each day. By the end of that period, he could identify 20 car names with their logos. I stepped back and let him take charge; every morning, he would eagerly bring the folder, excited for “car time.”
As my son started to realize he could master one car logo daily, his confidence soared. Now, at 12 years old, he’s about to enter a traditional school for the first time after eight years of homeschooling, feeling prepared thanks to our consistent small-step approach.
"Every significant achievement originates from modest beginnings. The seed of every habit is a single, small decision, and as that decision is reinforced, a habit begins to take root and flourish." - James Clear
Building My $100,000 Monthly Business Through Small Steps
I began my blogging journey by writing one article each week. Gradually, I increased my output to two articles per week. Now, I can produce 15 to 20 blog posts in a single day! Currently, I lead a fantastic team of 14 writers and three virtual assistants, and we are thriving!
Whenever we launch a new blog or start a new account on platforms like Hubpages, we begin with a slow pace, posting two or three articles weekly for the first two weeks before ramping up our efforts. For Medium, I started by publishing two articles per week for the initial couple of months. After gaining confidence from this consistent effort, I decided to take on a more ambitious challenge.
While I typically earn between $3,000 and $5,000 a month on Medium, my goal is to reach $10,000. I’ve set ambitious targets for my Medium account, blogs, and Hubpages, but I'm approaching these goals incrementally rather than diving in all at once. For example, I aspire to read 30 articles daily again after pausing at the end of last year; however, I will begin with just five articles a day and gradually increase that number.
"Small wins are precisely what they sound like and are integral to how keystone habits trigger extensive changes. Extensive research has demonstrated that small victories wield immense power, influencing outcomes far beyond their individual significance." - Charles Duhigg
