In 2014, I found myself navigating a particularly challenging period in my life, attributing my anxiety and depression to what many call a "quarter-life crisis." However, I soon realized this mindset was merely a way to evade the reality of my mental health issues. Through therapy and by confiding in friends and family, I began to accept my struggles with anxiety and depression.

This newfound acceptance motivated me to seek improvement in my mental health, which ultimately led to an unexpected opportunity. A friend introduced me to a mental health platform called HealthyPlace, where I started blogging in 2016. Below are five significant lessons I learned during my time as a mental health blogger.

Section 1.1: The Relevance of My Past Experiences

Even years after significant losses, my earlier experiences continue to resonate with me. For instance, it had been nearly nine years since my father's passing, yet I still felt pangs of jealousy toward peers who had their fathers by their sides. I penned a blog post for HealthyPlace about these feelings of jealousy linked to grief, and I also created a video to share my journey. The act of revealing my emotions through writing and video allowed me to process my grief while also helping others feel less isolated in their experiences.

I initially assumed that with the constant flow of new content on HealthyPlace, my older posts would fade into obscurity. However, a reader reached out years later during Easter, sharing that my blog post had helped her cope with her own feelings of loss on that holiday. This experience taught me that older narratives carry weight and significance, continuing to impact those I've never met.

There were moments when I faced deep despair, even contemplating suicide. I often wonder how different my life would be had I not reached out for help during those dark times. Listening to their recovery stories has profoundly shifted my perspective, and I genuinely believe that these shared experiences have played a crucial role in saving my own life.

My primary goals as a mental health blogger are to share my story, combat the stigma surrounding mental health, and foster greater awareness.

Chapter 3: Progress Amidst Challenges

Navigating the world of mental health blogging can sometimes feel daunting. There are weeks where I struggle to come up with fresh ideas or articulate my thoughts effectively. My mental state is not static, and I must remain attuned to my emotions and coping strategies to continue sharing my journey.

Despite these fluctuations, I remind myself that progress is a continuous journey. As long as I am alive, I can stumble and rise again. My imperfections contribute to my humanity, and they signify that I, too, am a work in progress.

In conclusion, I have come to understand that my mood disorders serve a purpose; they do not diminish my worth or ability to thrive. Instead, they have opened doors to pursue my passion for mental health advocacy.

If you are facing challenges with your mental health, remember that you hold significance. Even if you cannot perceive it right now, your existence matters and can have a profound impact on others. You are loved, and you are not alone.
