Finding Joy in Your Daily Busyness: A Path to Fulfillment

Chapter 1: The Nature of Busyness
Do you find satisfaction in being busy? This article explores the value of staying occupied and how it can positively impact your life.
In a time not too long ago, I was assigned to a project that offered little work during the day. Leaving early was frowned upon by my manager, who disapproved of even a 30-minute head start at the end of the day. To pass the time, I turned to my MS Office communicator, trying to engage friends in conversation, but most were too preoccupied with their tasks to respond. Some even expressed annoyance at my frequent messages, worried about being perceived as slacking off.
I resorted to using Facebook Messenger to connect with those who were available, but honestly, I derived no joy from these exchanges. Spending hours chatting felt like a waste of time. Back then, internet access was limited, and office computers restricted our browsing capabilities. I often found myself praying for more work, hoping to be so busy that I wouldn't have to disturb others.
Eventually, my prayers were answered when I was assigned to a project with a meaningful workload. I made it a priority to complete my tasks efficiently and leave on time. Ironically, those who had previously ignored my messages began reaching out, inquiring about my absence. I simply smiled and replied, "I'm busy now."
As I progressed in life, I learned to fill my time with various activities, even mundane tasks like organizing my wardrobe or cleaning the fridge. I discovered that keeping myself occupied, no matter how trivial the task, helped prevent feelings of boredom. Boredom can be unbearable, whether you're alone or in company; having a plan gives your life a sense of direction and purpose.
If your day is filled with work that leaves you exhausted by bedtime, consider yourself fortunate. Engaging in small tasks—like going to work, spending quality time with family, or even cooking—can be fulfilling. Conversely, idleness breeds depression, as the saying goes, "an idle mind is a devil's workshop."
Moreover, avoid aimless scrolling on social media. Constantly viewing the vacation photos of friends or relatives can lead to envy and discontent. This negative comparison can rob you of your happiness and worsen your outlook on life.
Instead, focus on activities that bring you joy. Whether it's going out alone for a solo date or engaging in hobbies, the key is to remain busy throughout the day. This prevents your mind from dwelling on negative thoughts about yourself or others.
Embrace your busyness—read, write, cook, or pursue whatever interests you. This engagement not only combats the risk of depression but also conserves your mental energy.
