Finding Balance: The Art of Not Overvaluing or Undervaluing Life
Written on
Chapter 1: The Dangers of Excessive Attachment
Have you ever found yourself excessively adoring someone or something to the point that it disrupts your peace? I certainly have, and it remains a cherished memory. I hold it dear to my heart, wishing to freeze that moment in time. This deep emotional connection often clouds my judgment, leading to irrational thoughts. I poured so much effort and made significant sacrifices to reach that state; it felt like a dream come true.
Imagine standing atop a mountain peak, taking a light leap to enjoy the breathtaking view! Breathe in that fresh air, but be cautious not to leap too high—losing control could lead to a swift fall.
Now, when you reach a point in life where you feel you've earned something after facing challenges, celebrate! Enjoy the moment with your friends and family. However, remember to stay grounded. It's crucial not to let emotions drive you to the brink of losing everything.
Maintain a laid-back attitude. Perfection is an illusion; not everything will remain perfect indefinitely. People make mistakes, often unintentionally. This state of "happiness" will eventually fade, and a desire for more may creep in, making it difficult to let go. Such clinging clouds your judgment, leading to a loss of self-control.
You are in charge of your happiness and emotions. Relish the journey, but don't tie your feelings solely to your experiences. Overattachment to external factors can be detrimental.
Chapter 2: The Inevitability of Disappointment
Things don't always go as planned, and sometimes we face disappointments.
As a planner, I prefer to have everything mapped out with no surprises, especially when traveling. I want to know the best spots, recommended foods, and optimal times for visits. The more detailed, the better.
There was a time I traveled abroad with a large group, and our leader had a vague idea of where to go. Unfortunately, many in the group were indifferent, leading to chaos. I felt frustrated and unable to enjoy the trip.
Reflecting back, I recognize my rigidity; I was like a malfunctioning robot. With age comes wisdom, and I find myself more relaxed about life's unpredictability. Accepting that not everything will unfold as expected is essential.
It's perfectly okay to have opinions and express them. This is a vital skill for everyone. However, remember to let go after articulating your thoughts. It's not about conceding to others, but allowing yourself to progress and savor life. Holding onto negativity gives it power over your life and emotions.
While it's essential to communicate your feelings and expectations to cultivate strong relationships, understand that some individuals may never change. They might be content with their own lives, indifferent to others.
I remind myself not to take things too personally. Instead, I focus on activities that bring me joy, like writing. Value your opinions to the extent that others’ views become mere background noise—much like when cooking while the TV plays softly in the background.
While advocating for your desires and goals is crucial, ensure you maintain a strong sense of self. Boundaries are essential. We must remember that we have moral limits; giving into desires shouldn't lead us to harmful actions.
In tough times, don’t hesitate to seek help from trusted professionals. It’s not shameful to ask for assistance, but it is regrettable to believe we can manage everything alone. Many excellent online therapists are available, eliminating the need to step outside.
Final Thoughts
Live your life with freedom and balance, like a coin with two sides. Life will have its down periods, reminding you that nothing lasts forever. Eventually, you'll see a rainbow after the rain.
Conversely, when life feels overwhelmingly bright, cherish those moments for the inevitable storms that may come. They will help you navigate through the challenges ahead.
Stay humble, my friend.
