# Evaluating OpenAI's AI Classifier: A Tool for Detecting AI Text?

Written on

Chapter 1: Introduction to AI Classification

As artificial intelligence progresses, various tools are being developed to help distinguish between human-written and AI-generated content. One of the latest innovations in this domain is OpenAI's AI Classifier, recently introduced.

In this article, I will analyze whether OpenAI's AI Classifier is a revolutionary tool for identifying AI-generated texts or merely another instrument with limited effectiveness.

This morning, I came across news regarding a new service from OpenAI. The company has launched an AI Text Classifier designed to identify AI-generated texts. If the tool performs as advertised, it could significantly assist educators and content platforms in distinguishing between human and AI-generated works.

Driven by curiosity, I decided to put this service to the test to see if it meets its promises. I will share my findings and present examples of this new tool.

Section 1.1: Test 1 - Assessing Human-Written Text

To kick off my evaluation, I chose to test the tool on the opening text of this article. My objective was to determine if the Classifier could accurately discern whether the content was written by a human. This test was crucial, as the tool's primary function hinges on its ability to differentiate between human and AI-generated texts.

The results were surprising: the AI Text Classifier misidentified my text as AI-generated. This was quite shocking, given that the Classifier is supposed to accurately distinguish between the two types of writing. I began to question the reliability of the tool, especially since I authored the text and am quite sure of my humanity (or at least I hope so!).

Section 1.2: Test 2 - Another Human-Written Example

For the second test, I utilized a text excerpt from a previous article discussing the benefits of ChatGPT in education. In this case, the Classifier successfully identified the text as human-generated, which was a relief.

Subsection 1.2.1: Test 3 - AI-Written Content

For my third test, I aimed to challenge the AI Text Classifier by asking ChatGPT—another OpenAI tool—to compose an essay about religion.

Religion is a complex and multi-faceted concept that has been a central aspect of human society for thousands of years. At its core, religion is a belief in a higher power or powers, and an understanding that this power or powers have a significant influence over the natural world and human affairs. This belief often extends to the belief in a moral code that dictates how people should live their lives and interact with others.

The Classifier successfully recognized this text as AI-generated. Well done!

Chapter 2: Pushing the Boundaries

In the next phase, I decided to push the limits further by requesting ChatGPT to craft a strongly pro-religion essay infused with emotional language.

I am a firm believer in the power of religion to bring people together and enrich our lives in countless ways. Religion provides comfort and inspiration, helping us to navigate the challenges of life with a sense of meaning and purpose. It gives us hope, reminding us that there is a larger, divine plan at work, and that our struggles and hardships are part of a greater journey.

The Classifier once again accurately identified this text as AI-generated.

In summary, the experience of testing the AI Classifier was intriguing. While it showed promise, its inconsistencies raise questions about its reliability. I hope OpenAI continues to refine this tool.
