As a result, it’s rare for us to spend even a moment without interacting with a screen.
With the rise of the Internet of Things (IoT), a term coined by Kevin Ashton in 1999, smart devices have become omnipresent. By 2020, over 10 billion devices were connected to the internet, and this number is projected to double to 20 billion by 2025. Given that these smart devices can listen to our commands, anticipate our needs, and recognize our gestures, we must consider what this implies for the future of design as screens become less central.

Zero User Interface, or Zero-UI, is a growing trend first introduced by designer Andy Goodman, formerly of Accenture Interactive. While it may seem innovative, you might already be familiar with it through everyday technology. If you've spoken to an Amazon Echo, utilized Siri on your iPhone, or skipped a track by double-tapping your AirPods, you’ve engaged with devices embodying the Zero-UI philosophy.
This concept revolves around moving away from traditional touchscreen interactions, opting instead for more natural forms of communication with our devices. This encompasses various fields, including haptics, computer vision, voice control, and artificial intelligence.

To grasp the necessity for this shift, we must examine how we currently engage with technology. Most of us rely heavily on Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs), which allow interaction through visual elements and icons. Whether using a computer screen or a touchscreen device, we often find ourselves tapping, swiping, or clicking to relay information.
Historically, human interaction with machines has been abstract and complex, starting with devices like the jacquard loom in 1801. Today, technology still requires us to adapt to its language, but the future lies in devices comprehending our natural words, behaviors, and gestures. This is where Zero-UI steps in, facilitating more intuitive interactions compared to traditional screen-based interfaces. Gesture recognition and voice-controlled user interfaces are at the forefront of this transition.

The Nintendo Wii, launched in 2006, was among the first to incorporate gesture-based controllers, followed by other models like PlayStation Move and Microsoft Kinect. The appeal of Zero-UI seems to be growing, and it’s unlikely to diminish anytime soon.

Andy Goodman asserts that Zero-UI offers designers a new dimension to explore. He likens the transition from traditional UIs to Zero-UI to evolving from two-dimensional design to considering user workflows in diverse contexts. Instead of relying on clicks and taps, users will input information using voice, gestures, and touch. This shift will move interactions from traditional devices to a broader range of physical objects we will communicate with.
Crucially, this concept can influence not just personal devices but entire environments, including homes and cities, thereby reshaping societal interactions.

Haptic feedback uses vibrations to inform users of notifications, widely utilized in smartphones and wearables like fitness trackers. This feature is also present in gaming controllers, enhancing the user experience.
III. Ambient Interactions
Ambient devices bridge the gap between digital and physical realms, offering glanceable information without the need to open apps or notifications. Examples include smart home devices controlled via Alexa or Google Home.
IV. Gesture-Based Interfaces
These interfaces enable users to interact with technology through physical movements rather than button presses. This approach was first popularized in gaming, with devices like Microsoft Kinect and the Wii.
V. Context Awareness
Contextually aware apps anticipate user needs, streamlining interactions by removing unnecessary steps. AirPods are a prime example, offering implicit interactions through embedded sensors.
These methods illustrate some existing ways to communicate with technology, and the future promises even more groundbreaking devices equipped with such capabilities.
Zero-UI Will Depend on Data and AI
As interface designers shift from traditional applications like InDesign and Adobe Illustrator, the complexities of Zero-UI will demand new tools and skill sets. According to Goodman, designers will need to become knowledgeable in science, biology, and psychology to create devices that understand diverse user gestures and commands.
As we advance beyond screens, our interfaces must become more automatic, predictive, and intuitive.

Zero-UI represents the cutting-edge of artificial intelligence. Soon, Google Assistant, Siri, and Alexa may become relics of the past. The goal of Zero-UI is to foster human-like interactions, and looking ahead, we may soon see the very notion of a "device" become obsolete.
