Experiencing bloating is far from enjoyable. This condition not only impacts physical comfort but also affects mental well-being. Bloating is often benign but can be triggered by a range of digestive, metabolic, and genetic factors.

Many individuals suffer from abdominal bloating and distension, which can lead to both physical discomfort and emotional distress. As highlighted in a study published in the Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility, abdominal bloating is a prevalent symptom, affecting up to 76% of individuals with functional gastrointestinal disorders.

In this article, I will outline my approach to effectively addressing my bloating issues and the sustainable methods I employed.

Resolving my abdominal bloating took longer than any other health concern I have faced. It required significant lifestyle adjustments, particularly in my dietary habits.

Understanding Abdominal Bloating and Distension

For many, bloating is often linked to gas-producing foods, a notion my family doctor suggested during my youth. However, it may also stem from various underlying health conditions, including irritable bowel syndrome, infections, food intolerances, and fluid retention.

Abdominal distension, which refers to an increase in abdominal size, often accompanies bloating. According to a recent article in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, both symptoms are commonly reported and frequently occur together, although they can manifest independently.

Researchers in the study reviewed the epidemiology and effects of chronic bloating and distension, exploring diagnostic strategies and treatment options. They noted that these conditions can arise from multiple factors, including food intolerances, past infections that disrupt the gut microbiota, disordered visceral sensation, delayed intestinal transit, or abnormal viscero-somatic reflux.

The paper also emphasized that treating these symptoms can be challenging, as no single regimen has proven consistently effective. Successful treatment involves identifying the underlying cause, evaluating severity, educating patients, and managing expectations. Therapeutic options may include dietary modifications, probiotics, antibiotics, prokinetic agents, antispasmodics, neuromodulators, and biofeedback techniques.

My Journey in Tackling Abdominal Bloating

For years, I grappled with bloating. Initially, my family physician seemed dismissive of my concerns. He believed that certain foods might be causing gas and advised me to keep a daily food diary to identify triggers.

The general medicine specialist took a comprehensive health history and conducted an extensive 45-minute interview about my diet, exercise habits, sleep patterns, and other lifestyle factors. She then ordered various tests, including blood, urine, fecal, and microbiome analyses.

After evaluating the results, she referred me to several specialists: a gastroenterologist to investigate my digestive health, an allergy specialist due to my rheumatoid arthritis, and a rheumatologist for my joint issues.

The gastroenterologist performed an endoscopy and colonoscopy, which revealed no medical abnormalities. However, he suspected food allergies might be contributing to my symptoms and recommended I meet with the allergist.

I spent $300 out of pocket for a brief consultation with the allergist, as neither government Medicare nor private health insurance covered it. The allergist found no significant allergies but suggested the possibility of food intolerances and advised me to see a dietitian to explore a FODMAP diet.

The FODMAP diet involves eliminating fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols—essentially non-digestible short-chain carbohydrates. The dietitian created a plan that required me to eliminate wheat, nuts, legumes, garlic, onion, artichokes, kale, dairy, honey, and several fruits like mango, watermelon, pears, and apples, which I had previously consumed in large quantities for health benefits. She also recommended reducing my daily intake of coffee and black tea, which I drank excessively for their antioxidant properties.

The FODMAP diet provided some relief, but my bloating persisted. When I revisited the general medicine specialist a year later, she informed me that there were no new alternatives to explore and recommended I continue with the FODMAP diet until our next appointment.

My family doctor had little insight, suggesting that it might be a hereditary issue that could improve with the diet. I was dissatisfied with this limited approach and was determined to find a better solution.

One day, I consulted a naturopath in a local health store for natural remedies. After a lengthy discussion, she suggested I see a functional medicine doctor, emphasizing that understanding root causes is vital for effective treatment.

At that time, I was unfamiliar with the concept of functional medicine, which was relatively new in Australia. However, she helped me find a private practitioner, whose consultation fee was only $85—much lower than the allergist who had provided little guidance.

The functional medicine doctor reviewed my detailed medical history and the findings from the general medicine specialist and her referrals. He advised that my condition required a more holistic approach.

The Optimal and Sustainable Solution for Bloating

Ultimately, the functional medicine doctor identified the root of my issues. He recommended an elimination diet, acknowledging my fondness for fruits and vegetables but suggesting that I could forgo them for two weeks.

He encouraged me to focus on consuming primarily steak and lamb, without prescribing any medications or supplements. Remarkably, after two weeks, I noticed a significant improvement in my digestive health—discomfort nearly vanished, and my waistline shrank a few inches. My energy levels soared, and I experienced enhanced mental clarity.

During a follow-up session, he advised extending this regimen for another two weeks, eliminating fruits, eggs, and all dairy products, including my beloved kefir, which I had relied on for gut health. Though it was emotionally challenging to cut kefir from my diet, I adhered to his recommendations.

Within a month, all discomfort had completely subsided. He then suggested slowly reintroducing small amounts of vegetables. However, even the slightest addition of vegetables or fruits triggered discomfort, confirming my intolerance to carbohydrates and sensitivities to pollutants in these foods.

He then referred me to a dietitian with expertise in the keto-carnivore diet, recognizing the importance of maintaining ketosis for my mental health.

Transitioning to a Life-Changing Diet

This tailored diet allowed me to adopt a one-meal-a-day approach, fundamentally transforming my health journey. Initially, the idea of a zero-carb diet comprising only animal products was daunting, especially given the negative perceptions I had encountered, even from reputable medical professionals.

To my surprise, I discovered that many individuals successfully followed a near-zero-carb diet based on animal products worldwide. I joined communities that shared their experiences, gaining valuable insights. Although I had enjoyed plant-based foods, they did not suit my body.

For instance, the elimination diet that effectively addressed my chronic digestive problems also helped resolve other health and fitness challenges. I successfully healed my leaky gut and eliminated loose skin while tackling my bloating, ultimately achieving a defined abdominal posture after the age of 50.

Complex health conditions often require time to resolve, and it is rare for one professional to address all aspects of multifaceted issues.
