Buettner, who has released a new book and a Netflix series, initially sought to "reverse engineer" the dietary habits of Blue Zone inhabitants to understand why they are less affected by diseases that plague many Americans. His research revealed five key food types that are consistently present in all Blue Zones.

As he explained to ABC News, "To understand what a centenarian consumed, you need to look at their lifelong eating patterns. Our extensive dietary surveys over the past century indicate that these individuals predominantly follow a whole foods, plant-based diet."

The five staple foods found in every Blue Zone include whole grains, leafy greens, tubers (like sweet potatoes), nuts, and beans. "Incorporating just one cup of beans daily can provide not only ample protein and fiber but is also linked to an additional four years of life."
