Daily Walks: A Simple Path to Improved Mental Well-being

Chapter 1: The Journey Begins
At the start of 2023, I set a personal goal to spend more time outside my home. The isolation I experienced since the 2020 lockdown had taken a toll on me. I lost touch with many friends, felt a lack of motivation, and found myself in a deep, dark mindset. To combat this, I aimed to engage in activities that would enhance both my physical and mental health—specifically, walking!
For the past few weeks, I've made it a routine to walk nearly every day, averaging around 5 kilometers, with my longest trek reaching 7 kilometers. This simple act has not only boosted my energy levels and sense of peace but has also positively impacted various areas of my life. Immersing myself in nature and inhaling fresh air has alleviated my anxiety, making me feel significantly calmer. Although I still have a long way to go in managing my anxiety, these walks have been a crucial step forward, as just being outdoors makes a noticeable difference.
Moreover, walking has positively influenced my sleep patterns. The physical exertion tires me out by evening, allowing me to consistently fall asleep by 10 PM and wake up at 5 AM. This newfound routine has greatly improved my overall well-being. I’ve gained confidence, and once you establish a habit of walking, you might experience what’s known as a "runner's high," a euphoric feeling that makes you want to keep going. I often listen to my favorite music or a podcast during these walks, immersing myself in the beauty of the present moment. If you're seeking an easy and cost-effective habit to enhance your life, I wholeheartedly recommend incorporating walks—whether short or long—into your daily routine, even if it's just around your neighborhood.
