Understanding the Core Relationship Goals in Marriage

Chapter 1: The Dream of Marriage
Like many young girls, I grew up imagining the day I would get married. Interestingly, my focus wasn't so much on the wedding itself but rather on what life would be like after. I envisioned a scenario where I was tending to a baby in a high chair, my husband playfully bidding farewell as he left for work, and a mischievous dog named Spot creating a little ruckus around the house.
However, my reality has been quite different. Yet, the desire to experience a joyful marriage remains strong within me. This necessitates a transition from my current situation. Fortunately, my present relationship has prompted a journey of introspection, revealing that many of us are often unclear about our desires and their implications.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there has been a noticeable rise in marriages in the U.S. since 2020. Here are the three primary goals of a marriage:
- Institutional: This goal emphasizes fulfilling basic physical needs, such as food and shelter, while fostering a supportive family environment. It aims to provide emotional and economic security for both partners.
- Companionship: This aspect centers on love and emotional connection, offering a sense of belonging, mutual respect, concern, and intimacy. It tends to flourish when foundational needs like financial stability and safety are already satisfied.
- Self-Expression: This goal highlights personal growth and self-expression, where partners support each other in achieving individual aspirations and dreams. Typically, this type of relationship is pursued after basic needs have been met.
It's essential to recognize that these goals can vary depending on an individual's life stage and personal ambitions.
What sacrifices are you prepared to make? Selecting the right partner often involves a trade-off among desired traits. For instance, someone seeking a relationship focused on self-expression may prioritize attributes like physical appeal, affection, and education. In contrast, an individual aiming for an institutional relationship might look for a partner interested in family and shared religious beliefs.
This information is equally relevant to romantic relationships outside of marriage. Understanding your objectives is crucial to finding someone who shares your vision. I hope this article provides clarity.
